Amazing..Our 930 Cars Are Now About The Same As 996TT? Pics
Linda Richman here and its time for..C-A-W-F-E-E T-A-L-K...
![]() So handosme young men.... the 996TT are now in the $35k-$40K range...same as a well sorted, well maintainted 930...gulp that is absolutely tempting. Never was a big fan of the 996, but a TT version for the same price as an '89 930..does lure me in all honesty! (although I would never sell my 930) What do you guys think? Case 1: Here this one is an '01 with 53K for $38K (it even has sport seats!), they might even take $35K for it!!: ![]() Case 2: Here this one is an '01 with 63K for $39,900 (brand new tires, nice stereao and a few upgrades), it is a Tiptronic though: ![]() Case 3: Here this one is an '01 with 55K for $39,995 (Sport Seats, Ruf Suspension, Rollbar, harnesses and a few other upgrades): ![]() Case 4: Here this one is an '02 with ONLY 37K for $35,000 (it is a Tip though): Anyways guys you get the drift! Discuss amongst yourselves until you start feeling verclempt. Yasin

Dear Linda-
Have you tried one? Fabulously fast cars - but but BUT nearly (nearly) devoid of character. You're rather isolated from the 'process'. I call 'em GermanoBuick's (NO offense to ANY who have one - just not MY cuppatea... er... coffee, seeing this is cawfee tawlk). I was never a fan of the slab sides nor the Boxster headlights (yaya I know vice versa buuuuuuut). Clutch feel is bleh - infernal dual mass is too light / rubbery, etc. etc. ETC. Color me carazy. Me I'd put me 40beans elsewhere... |

I'm right there with you Yasin. I've been watching the prices of these things fall since they came out and will add one to the stable one day. I picked up my '86 for $32K and with only 45K miles it is probably worth about the same or more today.
I bet the 996TT's are getting close to the bottom of their depreciation curve as well so I'm thinking about picking one up as soon as I can find a place to put it. (There's only a 2 car garage at my house and I already have 3 cars... sounds like it is time for a carport!) I think a 930 and a 996TT is a great combo. The 930 is raw and delivers MY ultimate early 911 driving experience but every couple of years I complain about the lack of a/c and heat. Adding a 996TT to the mix would give me the modern car comforts and a few easy upgrades later you're sitting on a reliable 600hp supercar. What more could a guy ask for? (well, maybe a 997TT but we'll see how those depreciate!)

BUT Just like the crop of all modern cars. The wiring and electronics will unfortunetly wear out, and create many more headaches than a faulty WUR or fuel accumulator. Our cars are mechanical enough to live on as long as there is gasoline. Not to mention you KNOW YOUR ALIVE while driving a 930. But, then again, one wrong move while hard on the right pedal and you might not be! A friend took me for a ride in a shiny new M5 with track rubber on it. WOW,one flick of a switch, (knob, dial, whatever) and it went from jeckyl to hyde. Then thought I had more fun in his prepped E30 M3 or his 2002. Give me pilot (driver) input or put me to sleep. Thats why I bought a 930 NOT a 996. My C36 if fun. Thats about it, fun. When I'm driving the Pcar, thats almost like a time machine back to my old hot motor & cal' look karmann ghia's and beetle's. Before I get off topic, my "pleasure car" is supposed to be about that, pleasure while driving. Now a 996 as a daily beater..............

Tempted here too. I'd love to have one as a winter car...beat the crap out of it driving through snow, salt and slush, throw away when finished. It would be nice to get some kind of turbo porsche fix while the 930 is bedded down for the winter.
I have driven a 996tt and it was scary fast, but also kinda boring. My mother and step dad have an '01 Carrera Cab which they traded an '86 targa for. After one drive in the '01, I told them I liked the old one better.

I would sell my modestly modified 930 in a heartbeat for a 996tt. The handling, the aero package, comfort, power delivery, stopping power and so on are superior to my 930. Having driven both on a track, the 996tt is far superior again. Yah, its cool to slide the ass while the turbo is spooling on the ragged edge, and the slingshot feeling you get when the turbo kicks in on the back straight, and the old school driving inputs the 930 requires to keep the car pointed in the right direction, but while you're doing all this, the 996tt is far in front of you eating turns and laying down power immediately.
If I could, I would own both. But if I had to choose one, it would be a 996tt. |

Sandman...you really worry me!!!
As for the 996, if I wanted a car that looks like it was squeezed out of a toothpaste tube...I'd buy a Taurus. I'm afraid this old dog won't ever hunt. Mark |

I SOLD my last uberfast project car for something with some character. It was an '01 Audi S4, and by the time I was done was making 350whp (AWD!) on 91oct. It hauled a$$, and with the suspension mods it really handled too. But even with all the work, it was numb and heavy. At least it had all the practicalities of 4 doors and a trunk. I'd take that car back waaay before getting all that ambiguity in an impractical, poseur-996.
Even my 965 needs some disambiguation, but it feels, handles, sounds and smells like a proper 911.

Your a 930 Guy or Your Not
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm older than dirt and I have a junk Pump and Cancer and I going to tell you a story about a dream. In 1976 I was working full time with a wife and three kids I was in the 5th year of 7 years of nite school to get my degree. Every nite on the way to school I passed the Porsche dealership and cruised the lot before going home. Thats when I saw my first Turbo; and it took my breath away. I started reading everything I could find about Turbo's and I was always telling my wife that was my dream car. One nite I drove through the lot and my Turbo was gone and I was crushed. There was no way I could ever been able to afford it, but some how it seemed like looking at that damn car was what kept me going 70 to 80 hours a week. When I got home I told my wife the Turbo was gone and she replied "it's just a car" and I told her "you don't understand it wasn't just a car, it was my dream". I finished school and got a better paying job. I found a 76 911 Coupe in the local paper. It wasn't my Turbo but it was a Porsche. I got the old girl home and spent countless houres cleaning and repairing untill she looked and ran pretty nice. I sold her about 6 months later and made about 3 grand on the deal. I continued to buy one, fix it, and sell it for the next few years totaling about 22 Porsches. I've had speedsters, 914-6, 74 Carrera Targa, and even a 73 RS Lightweight with 36,000 kilomoters on it. I had everything except my Turbo. I flew to OKC with a friend on a Fri. nite to pick up 2 early SC's I had presold. On the way back I was dirving a really nice 82 SC ROW Coupe that had the nicesest new leather aftermarket steering wheel I had ever seen. When I got home we were cleanng them up for delivery and I decided to swap out that steering wheel for a stock wheel I had. I took that wheel and hung it on a nail in my garage. Nearly everyone who came over commented on the damn steering wheel and I would just say " Thats for my Turbo" Well that damn wheel hung in 5 garages in 11 years and now it's in my Turbo. Last week I looked at a great 2002 993 Cab for a friend, I call them "pointers" because you don't have to know how to drive em you just point em. I took the 993 by the house to show my wife and she fell in love with it. Of cource my wife says " Why don't you sell yours and get one of those " I simple said "you don't understand; you don't sell your dreams" That old Turbo is raw, hard, brutal, scary fast, and tries to kill ya everytime you drive it but it still makes me see God; and God I love that Old Sled. Your a 930 Guy or Your Not and there just isn't any in between !!! Last edited by cole930; 12-24-2008 at 01:24 PM.. |

Isn't that the truth.
When I originally posted that I was doing my last week of 6 months of chemo and it was 3 AM because it gives you insomnia. I was out in the garage working on the old sled and the chemo was kicking my ass. I went back into the rec room and started going through the Turbo threads and replied to a post I saw. I thought of how those da-- cars had inspired me to keep going through school so I could afford to buy one and now the old sled is keeping me going through this. It's hard to say it's just a car it really has become much much more than that. Hope your doing well; sometimes the sh-- comes down so hard you need a big brimmed hat so just get bone stubborn and out last em. Cole Last edited by cole930; 12-24-2008 at 08:09 PM.. |

I did the graveyard shift in the ER last nite, and as usual was bushed when i walked out for the drive home, which is about 45 minutes through great driving road. Had i been in the usual beater 350z (actually a great car) i swear i would have fallen asleep at the wheel. But after the firt curves in the 930, i was wide awake, grinning from ear to ear, revelling in the spool of the turbo/zork/ BOV/ rip of the engine winding to 6500 on the straights... i even took the long way home! As tired as i was, when i got home, i wanted to keep driving! Paul Krasusky, (dude i gotta meet you some day!) couldnt agree more. Have driven one, but they are like some futuristic high speed tranport capsule. I hear they do make a mean track weapon, but i like to feel my speed.

Cole, great post buddy.
This thread is quite timely as I was looking around for a reliable wife transport (she's lacking since we got rid of the 550i) and I came across the 996tt's in the right price range. I'm going to wait a little longer for the price to bottom out - but I think its a great car for the more refined sex (women), or daily beaters. Justin: dude i love how you describe things - makes me wish I was driving right now, even the pig bimmer

Well I have seen 3.0 Turbo Carreras sell for $60k in Europe so an early car is worth more thats nice and unmolested, my 930 has 480hp and is tossable light and a blast and built like a tank and its easy to fix, its one of the cars I dreamed of as a kid when it came out, there is no susbstitute for nostalgia either, the car gets constant compliments, sell this car for a plastic souless poseur mobile people confuse with a Boxster, no thanks
