3.3l Turbo in SC Project - Questions

Hello all - -

I'm getting more serious about putting my ex track 1979 3.3l turbo motor in an SC. I have read as many posts about this as possible and have a couple of questions for the guru's here.

1 - Transmissions - which one?
I have the 930 4 speed as well, but not sure how it would fit? It seems that the 915 will bolt up, and a better clutch / flywheel should be used. Also read a few posts about the g50's. So the question is - if the 930 4 speed cannot be used and I would need to purchase a new tranny for the project, knowing the g50 is superior in every way, what does it take to use it? My motor is fairly stock, 1 bar boost and will remain that way - so is it worth the extra money/headache for the g50?

2 - Brakes
Assume a budget of $1500 for all 4 calipers and rotors. What are the best options? Carrera vs 964 vs 944 Turbo vs 993T's? Any insights appreciated on this one.

3 - Suspension
Will the torsion tubes and sway bars from the 930 work with the SC?

Financially it does not make since to change everything in an SC to basicaly make a 930 out of it.
If you want a "peppy" SC just drop a mild/stock 3.3T engine in and call it a day. The T-bars may need changed but all else can stay the same. More power more changes. At some point worth just selling and buy 930.
Been there and those are my conclusions.

I concur with Brian. A little extra is wonderful, but you can spend a lot of money keeping the braking, suspension, transmission and engine in balance.

I use a Sachs Sport Clutch. It has lasted for nearly a decade and still going.

Yes. I get flamed often for that but this isn't a track car so brake fade is not an issue. I live in the mountains as well.
It's really about balance. The engine is purposely held back to 0.7bar and 315WHP. More power would require a different performance level for every system in the car. With the 915 gearing you can wring a lot of performance out of a little torque. It's very fun and very quick as is. Not fast but quick.

I put a 3.3 in an sc years ago and am loving it. I initially had a stock 930 box with a 8/41 ratio. The car was too light to get full boost in 1st gear, 2nd pulled hard. I decided to go with a stock ring and pinion and change the gearing raising 1st &2nd, keeping 3rd stock and lowering 4th. I have since increased the hp a bit and added bigger brakes and stiffer suspension. I have put over 15k track miles on this car (79 minerva blue) at RA (my home track) and got my lap time down to a 2:29. The car is a handful but a blast to drive. The narrow body car cuts through the air better than a wide body but it is limited in the corners. Also I run 225,s and 245's on 7&8 inch fuchs. The rear tires don't last very long.

I had to mod the trans and engine mounts and do a little shaving on the trans case. The other tight spot is the turbo intake tube clearance to the left rear motor mount area. It will fit but you have to work with it.

thanks for the info dt930. i'm thinking of selling the 930 4 speed and just use a 915, maybe pocket a littel cash . . . or use it for the brake upgrades!
