New 930 Owner just Joined w Questions
Hello, This is my first post. I have read through some of the stuff on here and this forum is awesome. I bought my first Porsche last year ('86 911) I just recently purchased a 1985 Porsche 911 Turbo (930). This car is unique in that it has a 3.6L engine from a '93 Turbo w/ a G50 5spd. The car makes around 425hp and feels like a real rocket ship. It came with Fuchs 16 x 8 and 9. I recently purchased some 17" Fikse off Ebay. I think the Fikse's are 9 and 11. Currently the tires are 235 and 275/40. I feel like the handling is much improved but I have lost some of the brutal acceleration and increased the Turbo lag alot. What do you guys recommend? I am considering putting 245/45 and 315/35 tires on OR going back to the Fuchs w 225/50 and 245/45. I miss the blast off of the smaller/lighter wheels and tires but I love the cornering of the bigger rubber. This is my current dilemma. Many more to follow, I'm sure. Thanks everyone!

I vote for the Fikse wheels. The Fuchs just don't do it for me unless they are modded to 17'' and wide.

245's and 315's are the way to go...those are sizes appropriate for our turbos...

At 425hp I am surprized that you feel any difference in wheels at all!
Don't know what Fikse wiegh but you might look into Alton Fuchs which are very light weight. Staying with more narrow rubber and lower profile tires will keep the weight down as well. Personally, the bigger the better. Any weight penalty can be offset with more power!

Congratulations and welcome to the forum. Excellent first post, pics and all!
I recommend you drive the heck out of it, when you get bored of that get some instruction at a track. Keep up the ful maintenance regime but nothing else until you have 5 days' instruction at the track and then tell us what you instructor says about the handling. As you've mentioned, tires first, then suspension, then brakes, then power... Welcome!

Thanks everyone. I LOVE driving this car. I though my 3.2 Carerra was quick and handled good, but this is outrageous. Anyone from Colorado who knows 6th Ave through Golden to I-70 and then Berthoud Pass to Winter Park? That's where I took my new car this past weekend. 100mph happens soo easily even uphill at 10,000 ft altitude. I really like my Fikse wheels, and will keep them. I will keep the Fuchs in the garage as well.
I changed the oil to full synthetic, Castrol 20-50. I bought a pair of Porsche sport seats and replaced the broken race seats that were in the car. Other than that I just drive it. I can't wait to get some instruction at a track. I will join my PCA locally. When I first got the car the PO had 245/45-16 on the fronts but they rubbed when the steering wheel was turned hard left. They were hitting the oil cooler. Currently the tires in front are 235/40-17 and don't rub at all. If I go to the 245/45-17 will they rub again? What can I do to prevent this? I have a front mounted oil cooler as well as the one in the wheel well. Are both being used simultaneously or does the front oil cooler mean that the wheel well one is probably not hooked up and can be removed? I want to try some bigger tires but don't want to limit my turning radius do to the rubbing. Also on tire rack their are not ton of choices for tires at 245 and 315, what do you guys recommend for mostly street driving and possibly a little track? The goodyear eagle f-1's are pricey and the Kumho Ecsta are a bit cheaper... |

In terms of the rubbing with the 245/45/17 I would think it would depend on the type of tires as some run larger (wider) then others. There are some guys on here that know better then myself and can let you know exactly what will and won't fit... Bill Verberg comes to mind...
Local PCA has a DE this coming weekend out at the new track, Highplains Raceway, if you are ready to learn. ![]()

I think there is a interesting choice for you in the 16 inch tire. Kumho has a new spec tire which is a 265/45/16. This gives you extra rubber but at no weight penalty using the light weight front Kuhmo 225/45/16 when compared to the regular 245/45/16 and 225/50/16 set. The rear tire would still be taller than the 245/45/16 which changes your gearing slightly for the worse but the tire set-up overall would have very little weight change characteristics. Honestly you should drive the car for a while before doing anything. |

The CUMho's are waaaay more than slightly taller. My pretty worn Fuzion ZR-i 245/45/16s came up to the top of the scripting of the 265/45's. Huge difference. And I most def. notice the 'gearing change', it's a bit more long leg'd (gee just what it needed - not). However that said, I still dig them and the gearing tradeoff is WELL worth it IMO. Here's a mathmatical peek: Fuch divided by Ecsta: ![]() Fuch divided by Ecsta Squared: ![]() Dig your Carrera / Targa shot, and I really like the Fikse's on there (mostly as I'm not a fan of the Targa profile and them wheels break 'that' up nicely to good effect). Keep the Fuchs in the garage. And if the Fikse's make your 993tt motor'd 930 seem slow... I wonder if 'something' ain't right? Just a thought. Agreed w/ Dave - drive it first, make changes later. Kudos again tho! |

So I will continue to drive the car with the Fikse's. I will keep the Fuchs in the garage. Definatly going to check out the driving events and really learn this car. When I said the car doen't feel as fast with the taller tires, I think its just the increased lag due to the change in gearing. Its still crazy fast, but with the 245/45-16 it was horrifying!

You can always put a 8:41 ring & pinon, you loose a little top end but gain in drivablity. GB

Out of curiosity, what's the weight of the Fuchs with tires, compared to the Fikses with tires?

The weight difference is noticable, I haven't actually weighed them though. The gain in tire size, I think is worth it to go from a 245 to 275 or even 315 in the rear.
I did my First DE this weekend! Awesome fun! ![]() ![]() |

245 & 315 is the way to go.
IMO, you need to pay attention to: brakes first (to be able to slow down FAST), suspension second - tires, shocks, Tbars, Sbars, height - (to be able to turn FAST) and power last (to be able to go FAST). BUT above all, get to know the car. Welcome to the forum! |

Highplains was great. It was my first time driving on any track, so I have nothing to compare it to but I really enjoyed it. The instructors seamed to talk alot about how difficult this track is to learn.

When I went from the factory 16" wheels to 10.5x17 (275 width) and 8.5 x17 (245 width), I did not notice any change in acceleration.
