Cool RUF 3.4L New Member. Could use some help please. Clutch problems.

Hi All.

I'm excited to be a new member of Pelican Parts. You all are a tremendous source of information, inspiration, and fun.

I own an '84 930S Factory Slantnose delete with Ruf 3.4 L conversion ~450 HP/450 ft/lbs at 1.15 bar; K29S turbo; Andial ring and pinion, transaxle, fuel enrichment, 33,000 original miles. I'll try to include some pics if I can figure it out.

I have the car at the mechanics doing some routine maintenance. Clutch cable snapped in the parking lot. Ouch. Clutch was almost dead, now really dead. My question: He wants to install an OEM 930 clutch. I'm fairly certain that there is a "high performance" clutch currently in the car (I'm not the original owner). I'm concerned that the OEM clutch is not up to the task. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot, guys. Have a fantastic day!

The OEM clutch is quite good however you might want to call Speedwerks in NC or Jim Patrick in AZ for their recommendations. Welcome, good looking car.

I'd go with a KEP Stage two clutch. It's a little stiffer, but not too bad.

Beautiful car BTW!

The OEM Sachs clutch is good and easy to modulate but don't use the 930 rubber center clutch disc. Use the longer lasting and stronger spring center Sachs 240mm clutch disc instead.

Alot of people like the Kennedy (KEP) pressure plates better because they are around 11 pounds lighter and have higher clamping pressure to hold more torque.

The Stage 1 KEP will hold 600ft lbs and is supposed to have a similar feel at the clutch pedal as the stock pressure plate when used with a one piece standard sachs clutch disc.

Porsche Crest

Hi guys. Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions. I've got calls in to Jim Patrick in Arizona, Andial in CA (they already did the transaxle, 8:39 ring/pinion, and fuel enrichment on the car), and Ruf Autocentre in TX. I think I've covered my bases.

Again, I don't pretend to be a mechanic, but my thought process is this: whoever set up the car with the Ruf conversion knew what he was doing. I drive the car very hard and the clutch has lasted 30k+ miles (which is a miracle). So I figure, why mess with a good thing. The problem is, I'm not the original owner, so I don't know which clutch is in there now (but I am quite certain it is not OEM).

Bottom line, the guy who is working on the car is an outstanding mechanic and I don't want to step on his toes or his suggestion (which is to go with a straight '84 OEM 930 SACHS CLUTCH), but again, most of the feedback I have received says to stay away from the OEM clutch, or at the very least stay away from the rubber center clutch.

I'll keep you updated. Can't wait to get "The Beast" back on the road. Like most with this setup, it puts a 2 foot flame out the exhaust pipe.

I'm really excited to be part of the club.

Cheers!

I'm not a fan of the Centerforce clutch for the 930, which Patrick was selling for a while and may still recommend. I'd go with the Kennedy Engineering pressure plate (probably stage I)and stock spring centered OEM clutch plate.

I have a Ruf BTR and I am running the KEP with a motorsports clutch.
