What is this part? In search of front end noise
Some of you are aware that I've been chasing a noise in the right front of my car... only heard over ripple/sharp type bumps.
I've replaced or closely inspected every part of the front suspension, including removing the entire assembly to replace my control arm bushings. I recent suggestion was made for me to pull out the roll pin securing the shock. Pictures below... I see no wear or damage to either the pin or the bore. So I've moved into the trunk. Here is this black box... actually makes a fair amount of racket if I grab it and shake. The mount is firm to the body, but the component itself is loose in the mount. Can anyone tell me what this is? It has a data port and a small coax going into it... made by Fujitsu. Is this the remains of some antiquated mobile phone install? I'd like to remove it, but not without positive ID. Thanks, Dave ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Dave,
Can you tell me everything that it says on the unit? any numbers model, part etc would be helpful. If it has an FCC number you can look it up as well.

Looks like a mobile phone to me. Had one similar to it in my car. Took it out along with what turned out to be a K40 radar detector. Must have been two miles of wiring between the two.

I've traced the data cable, and it goes to this unit under the passenger seat. This is obviously stereo equipment, cables marked rr lr rf lf, etc. I'm now assuming the coax is an antenna run. It heads further to the rear, but I'm not going to pull all the carpet now. ![]() ![]() |

Dave, I am following your NOISE threads because mine make the same noise!
However I cannot hear it over my exhaust system when driving. But like you, I do not want an A-Arm falling off at speed ![]() I removed my passenger seat this summer to install a fire ext mount and discovered a red alum amplifier under my seat. Had all German lang stickers on it, never knew it was there and have no idea if it still works!

Could your internal strut bushings be worn to the point that the shock insert is loose enough in the strut to generate noise?

Never thought the noise I was chasing would be anything other than a suspension part. Turns out it was one of the stereo components... a fairly hefty metal part, loose in its own metal bracket. I feel like an idiot... but I guess it wasn't for naught... refreshing the entire front suspension on a 100k car.
Seems fairly obvious in hindsight... heavy metal parts rattling together, and mounted to the inner fenderwell, and with all that hollow space in the bodywork, probably just served to amplify the sound. The good news... the noise is all gone... and the car lost just shy of 10 lbs in the process... ![]() |

Then we have vastly different sounds originating from the trunk area!
Your Futitsu box (pictured to the right in your pic) was securely mounted I am assuming so it must have been the box to the left (with the gold mount tabs) Making all the noise… Where was it mounted?

It was the unit pictured on the right. Look at the pictures at the beginning of this post, you will see where it was mounted inside of the right fender. The bracket was mounted securely to the fender... but the unit itself was loose in the bracket.
