Loud noise on higher acceleration

Guys, I have a stock 82 930 that is making a loud noise when accelerating above 4000 rpm. Is this the way the car is supposed to sound when really stepping on it? If I accelerate slowly and let the rpms climb slowly, it doesnt make this noise. Also, no noise present when in Neutral either. It looks like there is/was some rubbing going on and I was wondering if this could be the noise? Thanks, don't have much experience with these cars so wasn't sure if this is just how it sounds or not. If its normal, what makes this noise?

Is your airconditioner pump and bracket bolted down good?

Would be happy to help, but you need to be a little more descriptive on what the loud noise sounds like. Is it like an exhaust roaring noise, metal on metal, knocking noise, squealling noise, whatever.

Well, I found a screw is missing from the coil... Although it seems pretty tight, I can move it a bit. The pump is solid. Is this coil for ac only?

It's a quick, deep flapping noise...kind of like a kids noise maker that you spin on a stick? I'll try and post a video, thats a pretty lame description. Is there a valve that could be struggling on an air intake somewhere?

Maybe a stupid suggestion, but could it be the waste gate that's opening. The way you describe it, it seems to be when the engine is
Loaded, boosting.

Is the noise coming from the left rear side?

If not the WG, then maybe an exhaust leak that becomes audible when exhaust pressure builds under load.
I believe a single cyl could create what may sound as a flapping kind of noise.

I don't believe it's coming from the bottom left, sounds like it is coming from the top vents on the tail possibly? Can i see the waste gate from underneath the car, where is it located? Newbie guys, sorry. I have to say, it's actually sounding better now. I took it out last eve, filled the tank an added som octane boost. Drove it pretty hard for about an hour. The car sat for 5 years with maybe 500 miles driven over that time. The more I run it, the better it is sounding. I do have a faulty tach now too, looks like a windshield wiper when I let up on the gas. Time for a new one, of just a loose connection?

check the silicon or whatever the material the boots are that sleeve the turbo to the intercooler. THe 4000 rpm makes me think its the turbo? I know lsat year when the mechanic put everything back together he had the bot a bit crooked and it left a small gap where it connect to the up pipe to the intercooler. he had tightened the clamp down and on the back side of the sleeve it was pinched. or maybe your sleeves are shot? just a idea.

The tac needle bouncing like you describe is a classic symptom of alternator/voltage regulator problems . . . you need to measure the outout voltage with a multimeter at the battery (should be around 14 volts with engine running) . . .

Ok, the noise I had mentioned is definitely a rattling noise for sure. I'll keep you posted, going to break out the tools finally.

With your tach symptom, I'm guessing the rattlin noise may be a bad alternator bearing (although a bad bearing itself wouldn't normally be associated with tach problems, but a bad regulator will). Pull the belt off, see if you can wiggle the fan. If bad enough, it may be contacting the fan housing. Just a thought....

Same car, another problem. The steering is locking up on low speeds on hard right hand turn. Any ideas? Also, when removing key from ignition switch, steering wheel does not lock. Thanks for the help guys, Merry Xmas.

Could it be worn out gaskets for the BOV housing?
This is a plastic gasket that tends to crack and would give a ratteling sound

Look at this thread for more info

A quick update.
I'm not sure how much boost the car is running yet, I should probably take it in to find out because the boost guage is not registering at all either. The tach is operating fine now after I spent some time tightening up wire connectors, fuses, etc. I haven't had the timing checked either, I don't know to do this myself and need to save up $ prior to having someone really go through this beast. However, per j930 suggestion I checked the seal to the intercooler and noticed it had been installed incorrectly. I will reinstall this weekend and try to line up correctly. But... I also noticed quite a bit of oil was on the pipe connecting the IC and covered all over the turbo? How common is this issue, what causes it, and am I damaging anything by driving the car hard/or at all? Sorry for the rookie questions' guys, I appreciate the help!

No that is not normal looking plus the bottom of your turbo has an oil leak problem from the looks of it. Maybe the feed line going to the turbo or the line coming from the turbo to the catch can is leaking at the very least. Or oil is getting into the cold side from a failed seal in the turbo at the worst.
