What Do You Think My Incomplete 930 Project Is Worth

Hello There Fellow Board Members,

I'm saddened to say that due to current financial hard times I'm concidering making the difficult decision of selling my beloved '87 930 in an incomplete state of an upgrade & rebuild project I set upon several years ago.

Here is a summary of where things stood before I shelved my monster 930 project almost a half a decade ago.

The engine and tranny were removed and everything was professionally disassembled, cleaned and measured. All tolerences besides the cylinders mic to about 0.0005" of factory specs. The original cylinders were lightly diamond honed and are within approx 1-1.5 thousands of an inch of spec clearance. Crank has been polished and is flawless. Rods have been refurbished and precision balanced.

The following is a list of what else is on my parts shelf and is ready to go . .

Carrera Intake Manifold & 930 Heads Ported & Polished To Match
ARP rod bolts
New rings (gapless) bearings and gaskets
New timing chains and tensioners
New exhaust valves, valve guides and valve job
New valve springs and retainers
New performance cams
New Andial 8:39 Ring & Pinion
HKS EVC IV (Electronic Boost Controller)
Stainless Steel Headers
Two Sets of C2 Wheels & Spacers (Silver and Black Race Wheels pictured below)

So far the remaining parts and work to be done is machining the cylinder/head mating surfaces, I hadn't yet made up my mind about the sealing options available.

Head studs, turbo, intercooler and fuel injection system and a few related miscellanious parts are still need to put everything back together. New rockers may also be required unless one prefers to refurbish the original ones.

The car has 119K miles on her now, most of them mine since I bought the car back in the 90s when it had about 60K on the clock.

I'm even concidering just parting everything out since I have the time and I may be able to make more $$$ that way, but I'm curious to know what my fellow 930 enthusiasts may think the whole project is worth as is? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

sorry to hear about your financial plight... In all honesty, it's worth more as parts.. I'd be interested in the wheels.., You might want to finish the engine with the money you make from the other parts.. worth more that way I would think

I would be interested in the rolling tub any wheels that it can roll on so you can sell the ones that are on it. Keep me in mind.

Good question! Hard to answer.

Sorry to hear that you need to part with your project. But, when times change you can always start again!

It is worth what you and a buyer can agree on.... Differnet numbers depending on your situation and the buyers situation.

If you have a dollar figure in mind that you need to get out of it, shoot me a PM.

I really really like the color combination, looks like a special car. I hope you took good care of it, based on the miles you probably did and enjoyed it. The new owner will be very happy. If it has not been wreaked , the body sure looks like a winner. With all those nice engine components it should be a easy to sell whole. Very doable project. transmission apart still? $$. Value is hard to say unless closely inspected.

If I was going to offer money. I would look at at similar year and condition good running , 930 selling prices. Then minus what parts and machining it needs to complete. Then minus headache factor on putting back together someone else's project. All that brings the value way down.

Just thinking of what some of the 930/911 parts sell for used. You will get more money if you have the time to part out. Seen threads of those part-outs strung out over a year or two, if not priced to sell. Plus you need the stomach dealing with flakes.

Many good ways of looking at it on how to buy and sell that car for sure.

I am very sorry to hear about your financial situation and I hope things turn around for you very soon.

On the car..it is definitely worth more parted out (sadly) than sold as a non-running car. You might be able to squeeze $16-18K for the entire car as it sits...or probably well over $22K parted.

Good luck to you!

Well everyone, thanks a lot for the input. Validates a lot of my assumptions of what I've been hoping it might still be worth to someone looking for a good 930 project or parts and pieces.

A few years ago I had someone offer me about $20K to take the whole project off my hands and after seeing what people were selling rolling tubs, engine and tranny parts off for it was a fair and tempting offer even though I passed on it at the time.

Many thanks to Slow&Rusty for throwing in a ballpark number that lets me know I'm not being too greedy since I still hoping the whole wad might be worth between $15-20K despite the current downturn in the economy.

To answer a few different questions that have been posed here and via a few PMs, the car is straight and clean except an almost unoticible door ding or two and the associated rock chips from the car being my daily driver and weekend racer for over six years. All the rubber including the whale tail is still in great shape.

The paint and leather has become a bit dull from years of use and setting in the garage, but I'm sure that a little elbow grease could rectify both of those issues.

At least I have some time to be patient to find the true value and perhaps a buyer since I don't really need the money till the second quarter of this year. Between the time invested and my love for the car a part of me will be really sad to see it go though.

Except for the missing parts and pieces (studs, turbo, efi and related misc) and cleaning up the engine bay all the engine and tranny parts are all clean enough to eat off of and reassemble. Only remaining machine work that needs to be done is the cylinder/head mating surfaces and new piston squirters put into the case.

Is it a sunroof car?

It's hard to tell from the pictures.

What would it take to re-assemble the engine at this point? Would you be better off finishing it if the funds are available and selling it whole vs assembly needed vs parting it out?

Head studs $ 575 for APR including washers and nuts
Turbo $ 1000 to 1500?
Refurbish rocker arms $ 15-25 each?
Misc adhesives, etc $ 200?
Intercooler $ 1500?
EFI $
Keep CIS $ free if you still have it?

What parts that you don't need that you can you sell?
Extra wheels?

As you all can see I made good use of my time and disposable income whenever I could.

Worked my way up to the few final and most expensive items required to put it all together.

As A930Rocket points out rather accurately, those remaining items could easily run over $5K not to mention all the time required to but this beautiful jigsaw puzzle back together. At this point in time I'm short on both time and money which is why the reassembly option isn't a practical one for me.

I still have most of the CIS system, though I sold a few CIS parts over the years to people needing replacement components since I didn't even concider putting it back on after the time and money spent to do the port work and acquire the carrera manifold.

I've already got a few people asking me about the wheels, so I guess I could unload the extra set if someone makes me a good enough offer for them.

Its the OEM unit for the 4 speed 930 trans. Not sure if I'd want to part it out seperately though since some people are inquiring about taking the tranny off my hands as a single unit.

Well, concidering the massive interest I'm getting for the parts and pieces it appears I'll be taking the route of parting it out.

Looks like I'll be needing to research the going price of major 930 components, but if anyone wants to start calling dibbs and making offers feel free to let me know.
