Daily driver, occasional track day or full race spec.? Factory oil separator still installed?
20w50 is good for a daily driver but remember to always get the temps up and give it the occasional WOT while at operating temp. otherwise you will more than likely get the dreaded milky substance others have posted about. Also inspect the oil you remove as it will give you the best indication of how your engine and oil system are performing. I like to also drain the turbo oil tank too.

Contentious?? Man, that's an understatement.
Easily available Valvoline VR1 Racing 20/50.

I've been using Valvoline VR-1 and the main/rod bearings looked perfect after 5 years of use from the previous rebuild.

I still use good old Castrol 20-50 and change it every 3K miles like clock work.

Porschephd:
Which Castrol blend are you using (full synthetic)? How many miles have you run using Castrol? Are you running Castrol in all of your Porsche's? Also, how are your cam lobes looking after significant mileage? I'd like to hear about your experiences with this oil.. I'm running Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 and everything is looking very nice inside thus far. 90k miles on the clock. I've been buying it from Amazon and using free shipping The previous owner also was running Mobil 1 full synthetic.

guys thanks for all your suggestions just to clarify the vehicle is NOT a daily drive vehicle its a sundays and high days vehicle for fun .The oil ive taken out looks dark in colour but not to bad ,i will send pic soon so you can check out .
The oil in there is mobil 1 15w/50 but as its a 930 turbo ive got a few little niggly oil leaks but nothing massive im aware that certain viscosities are better at helping this? additionally im in London UK so our winters tend to be cold and summers sometimes get into high figures which if im honest will most likely be the only time im driving her .I had thought about track days in the future so any updated comments taking into consideration this info would be appreciated . I dont know if i can getg "pen" oil here in uk? thanks |

Anecdotally some people have noticed that if you switch from dino oil to synthetic, oil leaks may appear (or worsen). Conceptually the slipperiness of the synthetic is so good, it slips through cracks and crevices that dino oil would not have.
I used to run Rotella, but as I can't find it with the old formulation any more I've switched to the Valvoline VR-1 that was on sale for $2.50/qt a couple months ago. I've got a few cases in the garage for the future. I've also got a case of Brad Penn sitting on the workbench. All 20w-50. Of note, the regular Mobil 1 is not considered "good enough" anymore. The V-twin stuff is acceptable, but I think it's almost $10/qt. edit: Ultimate Motor Oil Thread or Why we hate CJ4/SM oils

The Pumpkin lives on a steady diet of Brad Penn 20-50. I get it from the Vavoline distributor in KC.
