Intercooler concern
![]() Ok, when I get out and feel the intercooler after driving its hot..... If you look at the picture, I have air going to the engine bay from the two scoops, and thru the tail directly, and thru the intercooler.... Now, if I wanted maximum intake cooling I would seal off the two scoops and block half the tail grill so all the air pulled in by the fan would go thru the intercooler. Am I wrong on this or do you think the cooling is as good as it will get. Any ideas on how to maximize cooling for the intercooler?

Yes you are right IMO. Ducting as much air as you can through the core will enhance the ability to lower intake temperatures. I believe the 993twin turbo did this by sealing the intercooler edges to the deck lid.

Blocking the intake ducts and damning the IC core to the louvers is the only way to make the air come through it. If you have EFI or are able to monitor your IAT's, and are no more than 110F on full boost I wouldn't worry about it. I shoot for 100F Max at full boost. When I have it I'm happy. If your temps are higher, then components need to be changed to control your IAT's.

I had a GT2 wing similar to yours. All the air went around the intercooler. NONE went through it. By building a shroud and partially blocking flow through the huge grill the air was forced/sucked through the intercooler. Made a HUGE difference. I left the twin air ducts open and removed the grill panel in the heat of summer but kept the shrouding. That was a worthy compromise that allowed the engine to keep cool.

How much time passed between you stopping the engine and putting your hand on the intercooler? I ask, because they heat soak rapidly once the engine is shut off . . .
That being said, I too belive intercooler shrouding is a good idea, and built one for my Garretson several years ago. |

You'd have to find a different radiator fan or change your intercooler but this works for me, I get within 3 degrees of ambient on 12psi and no heatsoak.
![]() Scirocco twin radiator fan is switched by the ECU to relay on when certain variables are met, like temps and RPMs.

My old type intercooler(stock930) with no shroud was cool to touch after driving on the hwy..
With my andial/garretson intercooler is warm to the touch compared to the stock one..And I built a shroud etc..etc.. The fin design on the stock 930-intercooler is spaced more open and did cover(sit) the fan more compared to the tight fin design of the andial, twice as thick; doesn't sit directly over the fan like the stock one does.... (draw more air in) My temps are still low.. Walt Last edited by wjfk32; 10-12-2012 at 08:11 AM.. |

Right after
Right after I shut the car off, it's rather warm....just below hot. I will blank off the open side and port the scoops to something useful.
Boy, I'm getting an education on turbo cars... ![]()

Kokeln intercooler, no shrouding yet.
After spirited driving on 65 degree day intercooler is warm.

Show your intercooler
Lets see those intercoolers!
I need to get some ideas. Porting of the air from the scoops might prove to be more difficult than I thought.

The air from the scoops should go to the air box as a cold air intake. That is their intended function
