Quick question I can't find the answer to

Yhanks for looking.
Is the early 930, 1977 930, a magnetic pickup distributor or other type? Thanks.

Should be magnetic just like later 930s. It has the green wire coming of the distributor on the fan side that goes to the CDI or MSD.

Thanks guys, just trying to track down why I don't get spark from the msd unit. I feel it's that I have a ground signal wire from the distributor messed up. I'll check and change tomorrow.

That's the green wire and it's pretty expensive. It could also be the coil. There are checking instructions over MSD web page to help troubleshooting their units.

From what I remember , the MSD instructions are misleading in the area of the distributor pickup wires. Try reversing those two wires . I ran into the same problem

But that does not solve the 'no spark' issue. Wrong wiring just gives mad advance, atleast on my 930.

So I'm supremely pissed. I can't seem to figure out why I still have no spark. The msd works as I tested it. So I cut the harness and wired right off the plug after the green wire. I even tried multiple ways reversing wires and trying both the green/violet wires and the white wire. I tested to see if I get spark at the wires and I don't, so I feel maybe it's the distributor???
Everything is new to me, but used parts in the distributor and harness. New engine that has zero hours and used fuel system which has its own set of issues to figure out. One thing at a time though. If you have any ideas please chime in? Thanks.
PS I believe I could use my 77 911s distributor in the 77 turbo as a last resort so.....I'd rather not though.

Did you make sure you wired the MSD like this?

MSD install question

Yeah, more than once too
My car is not the same as the 3.3 turbo in that it has different distributor rotation, one vacume port and maybe others. This has been my question but I'm leaning toward the fact my distributor may not be sending any signal at all but I've made this mistake before followed by unnessissary part orders. How could I test signal production from the dizzy?

Yes, I believe it is.

It is basically a winding inside the distributor shaped line a donut . There is a metal reluctor (sp?) inside the distributor that spins when the engine is running. The reluctor is made of ferrous metal and has 6 teeth on it.

If my memory is correct, you can set you digital volt meter to a/c and connect it to the two pins coming out of the distributor. You should see a peak and low voltage coming from it.

Another way to test is to put a led across the two terminals of the pulse generator. If the led flashes (in time to the a/c sine wave flipping) it is good.

It's been a very long time since I played with distributors so I am trying to remember as best as I can.

Your correct. You can test the pulse generator by using a multimeter across both poles and spinning the dizzy. The pulse generator should be 600 ohms across the two terminals. If you need a new pulse generator then they are available from Napa. Echlin and also Delco make them. Use the SEARCH.

So I attached leads from the voltmeter set on ac and turned the shaft and got nothing. So I hooked up led light to the terminals from the dizzy and no joy. Guess I'll dig in deeper to see what's amiss.

Ok the pulse generator works, the green wire works, but the plug and part of the harness has a short between the plug and the wires I'm using to wire the msd. Found the problem with the ohm meter thanks hfr racer. Used an old plug/wire to replace the bad one and got signal and some spark halaluya. Now I just need to figure out if it's the ignition timing or heaven forbid cam timing that's not allowing it to start. it pops with some pissed off bangs from the exhaust and intake manifold as well. Hmmmm.

Distributor was 360 degrees off, this is old news now just an update for the post.
So the origional problem was a bad harness, I used the green wire and it was magnetic pickup distributor. All is working great with the msd and plugs gapped to about 1.5-2mm. Thanks for all the help.

Glad I could help.. Make yourself an ignition troubleshooting guide. I found this very handy once on the side of the road If you would like mine as a reference then just PM me and I'll send it to you.
