Weight Loss, anyone give some ideas?

Hi Fellas.

I want my car to lose a bit of weight and need some ideas and pictures of things you guys have tried.

Anyone tried making their own RS style door panels?

I'm thinking of 3.0ltr RS GRP bumpers but don't know if the rear one will melt.

I want to do what I can but be able to put the car back to stock if I ever have to.

All your ideas will be greatfully appreciated.

Robert.

I don't know what your starting point is, but the "diet" begins with deleting: a/c system (all of it), carpets, extra seats, radio system (all of it), wet battery, spare tire, right set of wheels and tires, right set of bumpers... then, continue with aluminum body parts... how light you want to go?

I'm going to start with budget weight loss because Aluminium gets expensive.

My complete A/C system is off the car already, don't know what weight it has shaved off.
Any ideas on the weight of a complete A/C system?

Thank you Miguel for the ideas, I don't listen to the radio, the engine is my music.

That's an interesting thread, complete with individual parts weights.

I've had alll the carpet out of the car and in my hands.. it's not heavy - the sound absorbtion material under it and behind the rear seats comes to about 33 pounds.

I know because I removed it all including the dried tar crap stuck to the interior of the floor pan and on the backs of the front fender wells in the corners under the dash and weighed it.

There is more noise coming into the cabin after that but you can put in lighter more modern material in place of it.

What year and model is your car? I had an 82 Grey Market car and I pulled 12lb side imact door bars out of each side, as mentioned before, the sound deadening material is about 30 lb (I scaled a bucket of it), your seats can be really heavy, do you have/want to keep A/C. The list is big for options, just depends on what you want to have as an end result. User JIMTWEET had a nice clean set up for his heater, backdated everything and took out all the blowers.

ya know those big ugly rubber things on the back bumper?
they gotta go.

that'll be 15 pounds see ya later.

you can get little snap in plastic plugs to fill the holes at home depot. paint em with touch up paint.

tag lights come in many flavors from LED license plate bolts made for bikes, BMW 2002tag lights which were also used by porsche for 911R door number lights and they are insanely expensive now, or go to pepboys and get a pair of generic ones for $9 and paint them satin black.

Thanks for the ideas.

I found the '438lbs in 5 days' article. Wow, good work.
Can't believe just the A/C can save 50lbs or so.

jenny craig?
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Bumpers give the best bang for the buck I would say, cost versus reward for other smaller items is not worth it, splitting hairs basically.

You can spray glue some reflective heat barrier material to the inside of the bumper and if necessary add in a small heat shield. Somewhere like Merlin Motorsport will have what you need or even Car Builder Supplies. I have seen 930s with plastic bumpers before but some heat protection is used. Bumpers tend to warp before they melt or burn.

Can do Lexan quarter windows and rear window. Keep in mind you can't use the wiper on dry Lexan (yes, including 'accidentally') - ruins the Lexan. Stock seats are quite heavy. But depending on the seats you may want a roll bar or cage.

As mentioned, Porsche had quite a rubber fetish in this era. The whale tail can be swapped for a cosmetically-identical fiberglass unit. Can always paint the "rubber" parts flat black to maintain stock appearance. Most of the car's rubber maintains its shape with metal - also heavy. Sunroof drive mechanism can be heavy.

I recommend keeping door bars, or swapping in newer doors with door bars, for any car. That's me.

Be safe, have a good evening!

Merlin.

My cars a 1980 GP White Euro.

I've already removed the full A/C, fitted headers and a RarlyL8 single exit, I think Hooligan, exhaust

This must have saved me a few pounds.

Im thinking about GRP bumpers now, sort of 3.0 RS or 1974 Turbo Prototype.

My seats are really heavy too, even though their not power seats. I really like your seats. Can you give me any information on them?

Anyone out there done the bumpers thing? Any photos or post links would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Robert.

Which ones, the Corbeau or the Recaro? I have decided to go with a set of Recaro's for the build and the grey/black ones are for sale. I can scale them if you want weights.
