Won't you need the flant fan? Would be the nicest piece of he puzzle
|
Jonathon:
If i could afford $15,000 for a flat fan my car would be at TurboKraft and my old ass wouldn't be crawling in and out from under it. Cole |
Ha ha, fair enough mate, thought one of these nice chaps on here may have one hanging around on a shelf spare for a cool war hero like yourself :-)
|
Jonathan:
I'm certainly not any type of hero, I was an 19 year old, scared s------- kid who was lucky enough to come home with just a couple scars. The heros are all those named on that wall !!!!! I do have dreams about flat fans though !!!! Cole |
How do they run those flat fans?
How hard would they be to make. Alan |
Alan:
The flat fans seem to accomplish several things. Allow more room for moving exhaust, turbo, and CIS location. Better distribute cooling air directly down, through, and around the engine. The fan shroud was redesigned to center mount the fan allowing the fan to draw fresh air through the tail louvers and directly on top on the engine. The fan was belt driven off the crank pulley and connected to a right angle gear drive that turns the fan. This setup did little to adequately cool the engines. Later the 934.5 maintained the flat fan and added front mounted intercoolers. This combination of intercoolers and flat fans continued to be used on many later race motor configurations. 934: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332858525.jpg 934.5: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1332858947.jpg Cole |
it would seem to me that it wouldn't be that difficult to come up with a flat fan kit would it ? You'd need a bracket and an alternator, the tough part would be a gear set to move the motion 90 degrees to run it.. Anybody ever done it ?
|
That guy in Sweden that modifes 930 motors has or had a flat fan kit on his website. I think his name is Mike and it's been years since I looked at his website and I don't know if I still have a link to it, I'm sure somebody does.
It was very expensive and not practical for a street car. I doubt the gear set under the fan would last long for a street car, but I'm just guessing that. |
Todd:
There is a guy in Finland, or in that area, that sells them. $15,000. With the development of good intercoolers the flat fans are kinda antiquated. Although it's way cool I didn't think they had quite 15K worth of cool factor !!!! Cole |

He has lots of 934 stuff. I bet he could add quite a bit to this thread. http://www.spezialmotorer.com/start/...n/Dsc04363.jpg Notice the cone. http://www.spezialmotorer.com/start/...4_intake_s.jpg |
Man !!!! It's like a 934 Psyco's candy store !!!!!

"The fan was belt driven off the crank pulley and connected
to a right angle gear drive that turns the fan. This setup did little to adequately cool the engines." Where did you get that information? All 935 motors and all the fully air cooled 962 motors that also had air to air intercoolers in the side pods or one big one on top of the injection stacks and plenums had flat fans because they moved more cooling air over the heads and cylinders and distributed it more evenly than a street car vertical fan and shroud ever could. |
Jim:
When I posted that statement I was speaking the 934. If you continue reading the next paragraph states: " Later the 934.5 maintained the flat fan and added front mounted intercoolers. This combination of intercoolers and flat fans continued to be used on many later race motor configurations." Cole |
Anyone have info on the ignition, distributor or curve for a 934 and 934.5? Was it a stock distributor?

flat fan replica on 934 engine
Hi everybody,
just bought back the complete 934 K-jetronic from my friend Micke Svens ( sold it to him last year ), to put it on my standard 930 turbo FOR TESTING MY REPLICA 934 935 FLAT FAN SYSTEM. I will keep you posted about progress. If everything works , the system will be distributed in USA by Justin Broughton from D-Zug. Benno |

Benno;
Incredible !!!! An absolute work of ART !!!! Looking forward to seeing more. Cole |
Anyone have info on the 934 fuel injectors / nozzels ?
I just tried to screw in the stock 3,3 l turbo ones, but they have a smaller diameter thread than the one cut in the 934 magnesium intakes. The PORSCHE # of the 934 nozzels is : 930 110 226 00 and they seem to be race parts. Benno |
Only help I can suggest is send an email to Kevin at Gunnar Racing and ask him.
He's busy though so keep that in mind.. I don't think there is anyone in the USA that knows as much about vintage Porsche race cars as he does. When I worked in the body shop there back in the mid eightees he let me drive a real 934 about 200 feet through the parking lot to park it in one of the shops bays:) It was a dark blue one and I think it had race history but that was a long time ago and I didn't know anything about the car. I remember the buzz of the fuel pumps when turning on the ignition and it started right up and idled good. It was not difficult to slip the clutch to move the car slowly either. |
