1979 930 Modifications
Well, I am about to open up the check book for my car. My Porsche Tech is dropping the motor this week. Planned modifications are;
SC Cams Inter Cooler Hybrid Turbo K27/GT35 Headers Muffler Fuel Head modification WUR modification Wastegate 1 bar I am currently looking at several tuners hoping to put together a package deal (So far, I am leaning toward a certain tuner, but I'm open to any and all suggestions). I would appreciate any thoughts comments and/or recommendations before I break the bank. Don't allow me to make a huge mistake. ![]() Last edited by 9Thirty; 12-14-2012 at 02:55 PM.. |

Efi
You will be much happier with a efi motor, and save money in the long run!

You're on the right track keeping the CIS = proven stuff. That's about as safe as you can go with the exception of the 1 bar spring. You might need an extra oil cooler to compensate for the extra heat generated by the extra horses. You'll be pleased with the results...
EFI is more efficient/effective WHEN IT WORKS = slippery road. Some folks, including many on this forum can't make it work reliably. |

Well, I don't have an efi, my 930 is still CIS.
I don't think we can talk about what is right or wrong. It is all a matter of what you want. I might do it some day, but not until I have gotten my CIS tuned properly and gained a thorough understanding of how to work on it. There a lots of proven DIY efied 930s on this board. Many have got the test of time along with dyno results to back it up. If you want big hp, more than 400whp. I think the default answer is efi, but if you, like me, can settle with CIS and 400 reliable hp, CIS would do. Brian, rarlyl8 is a solid contributor to these boards, and not afraid of helping and expose his work to the board. That speaks volumes for customer satisfaction if you ask me. That is what I'd choose going the CIS route I think he might tell you, that modding the fuel head is not necessary with the mode you have planned. That should save you some money - He can comment on that. Good luck

I've heard good and bad depending on who you talk to or read about on the forum. I've also heard that it can set you back over 10K. I've been told to just ship the motor to Pat Williams racing for mods and EFI and be done with it. Just not sure I would like to drop that kind of cash on her just yet.......

With hindsight, you may realize in the end that that would have been the cheaper route. Time will tell. But writing a check is short-changing the journey, and these cars are not about the destination. Sure we love driving them- (I had a great ride just today!) but fully half or more of the enjoyment is about learning and gaining experience on a unique automobile. I'd say build out the CIS as you originally stated, do as much as you can yourself, and grow in competence along the way. Maybe you do go EFI someday, maybe you don't. If and when you do, you'll make better decisions.

9thirty, call Pat Williams. Look up his website. You and your ride will be treated right. There are too many shops out there salivating right now at the chance of beating you. I know this well.

I've heard good things about him too.
Pat Williams Racing (porsche) I wouldn't recommend wasting money and time on CIS and there are much better performance turbos than any hybrid kkk. |

Efi
I did my EFI myself, initial cost was around 5K before I sold my CIS components. Could not be happier, it was as simple as installing a base map and tweaking to my cars needs. Now I can tune from the drivers seat, not the engine compartment.

Figure out your goals first. If 375-400 rwhp is all you crave CIS will work. But, EFI and ignition control is light years ahead in drivability, throttle response and engine safety

I think you are safe with your plans for cam upgrades, turbo upgrades. You should throw in there exhaust upgrades and an intercooler upgrade. All these are relatively affordable and bolt on upgrades to your current engine platform.
I would not recommend spending money on CIS since it's obsolete and just getting older and m ore expensive each day to support (parts and experts are disappearing as time flies). But, getting your current CIS checked and tuned (pressure and WUR adjustments) is probably reasonable. Research the best cams and turbo to fit your plans. These choices are somewhat linked by how you envision wanting your car to respond. EFI is not cheap, but is a great upgrade down the road. I am much happier with my EFI and have no issues with it. CIS was great in 1980, but that was over 30 years ago. The IT industry has provided the means to reliably manage ignition and fuel delivery with much less vacuum and mechanical controls required than CIS requires.

I'm not too hard core and don't use my 79 as a DD. i have B+B headers and mufffler, 964 cams, open dump pipe w/ 1 bar spring, K27, and raceware head studs have been happy. unless i have prolonged (race/DD events) heavy driving i don't see a need for an intercooler upgrade of EFI.

EFI always
EFI is not related to any vericle or brand Look up e.g. VEMS as the most global used, has most features and cheapest, 1/5 of others Regardless brand key to success is know-how or willingness to learn |
