1986 930 Project.....My first Turbo
I've been out of the Porsche scene for over ten years and have been searching for a way back. A newer guy at work mentioned that he had this car that he was working on. The car was his mother's that she purchased new and daily drove. She isn't even a rock star, which I did ask. 15ish years ago she was told it needed a complete engine rebuild and it got parked. He dropped the engine and was going to DIY the rebuild and never got around to it. He's moving and I finally wore him down and I think it was easier for him to sell it to me, instead of dealing with the constant harassment.
![]() So, hopefully I can get this thing back on the road. My goal is to keep it pretty original and scruffy. It has lived a life already and I want a driver that I can have as much fun as possible with. As picked up: |

Bath Time
First things first; I wanted to give it a long overdue wash. The amount of mud under it was unbelievable. I've since found that the original owner was an avid horse back rider.
I first hit the low hanging dirt with the hose and scrub brush. Then I went to the pressure washer. Lastly, I followed it up with pressure washer hooked to the hot water spigot for my washing machine. It's littered with chips and rash, but I'm going to just try and clean it up. |

I unloaded the engine from my truck and did a leakdown test. Cylinders 4,5,& 6 all have almost 100% leakage. I spoke to a local gent, whom I've heard does fantastic work. He stated that it was most likely chain tensioner failure on the right bank. So, the engine has been loaded back up and delivered to Farmer's Automotive for a full rebuild.

Nice score and welcome back to Porsche ownership.
Looks like a fun project, and you seem to have a great space to fix it up. I've found this little corner of the Porsche world to be a lot of fun. Is that an NSX sharing the garage?

Great find and project.
I can't believe the work friend didn't get it fixed after all those years. Lucky you. You're doing the right thing by just having a shop knock out the repairs and get back to driving. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

1986 930 Project.....My first Turbo
Quote:
I've lived in Indy my whole life. I actually worked at tom wood as a wash boy when they bought giganti porsche. I remember the very day we brought the giganti inventory over. There were 5 cars as these were hard times for porsche. A 964 cab black,964 coupe and a RSA black. I can't remember the others. I wasn't old enough to drive at that time but one of the guys driving the inventory over told me to come along. We drove the RSA back! Yes one of my first experiences riding in a porsche was in a brand new RSA! To this day I remember those cloth recaro seats and how the exhaust sounded on acceleration .That ride changed my life.
