Oil Return Tubes
Obviously collapsible tubes are great once the o-rings start leaking but is there any real advantage to using them (versus solid factory-style ones) on a fresh build?

I would never use the collapsible on a new build. They run the risk of leaking at the joint.

Thanks, Gents, you confirmed what I was thinking.

Oil return tubes were the thing I fretted the most when I rebuilt mine. As my brother and I were reinstalling the engine, I told him, "whatever you do, do not damage those tubes!" That is a lot of work to replace one. Ugh....

I was at Gunnar Porsche Racing here in West Palm around 4 months ago to see Kevin and I was looking at a Porsche 962 motor. It had collapsable oil return tubes in it. There's no problem with them and they are made from thicker metal and seem like higher quality if you ever look at them closely.
You can replace the green viton o-rings in them if you ever wanted or needed to. Mine had collapsable ones in it when I bought it and when I rebuilt the top end I replaced the orings in them. The ones I took out weren't leaking and they looked fine so I saved them. Anyway, I like them. They are easy to remove and replace when the motor is completely together. You just have to remove the exhaust headers to get to them. To compress them you can remove the lower rocker cover and the snap ring on the tube and push the end of the tube towards the engine case with the handle of a screwdriver. ^ Agree. You can JB Weld the seam if you really are concerned. They are cheap enough not to worry about replacing them, if needed.
