:p welcome, and good luck! |
making a lot of progress.....
been looking at rotisseries. and need to find some more storage space..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1451570287.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1451570307.jpg |
cousin dropped by and helped me get the cam nuts off. and since I have pulled the PP/flywheel, had to improvise on a crank lock. per Wayne's book, backed off all the rocker arms too.
just getting started on the TB/WP on my Bro's 87 944S, and planning a full suspension upgrade on the 951, so work on the 930 will be pushed to the background for a bit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1453044569.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1453044550.jpg |
What year 930 gearbox did you get? You'll need a short 76 77 gearbox to fit into a 911.
Others have attempted the same http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/860717-930-trans-911-mid-year.html |
it is an 86, and yes I know it will take some work. have a good welder/body man. and working with Steve Wiener, Rennsport Systems to rebuild, regear, LSD and help figure out the fitment.
will get the engine / tranny rebuilds done and verify fitment before the paint. |
PS. thanks for that link. think I had seen it and had meant to save that link for reference.
|
Awesome, looking good Bob. I think your engine lid would look good like you mentioned by cutting it out and using mesh screen. Easy way also to fix it. Lot of work and time to straighten out all those louvers and in the end you'll probably cut it out anyway. If the sun roof is something that you really want to do,go for it. Because after you'll be saying to yourself, shiyt,I should have removed the sun roof. I did that with my roll bars, thought about doing it and let people convince me i don't need them.I was already in there, had all the tools out and now I regret not welding front bars. If your handy with a welder you can easily build your own rotisserie. I can show you how I built mine with adjustment on it to work with any car.
|
well.... I am buying a good DP935 tail. I really like the one I have, looks right and different than the average 930.
when I get the new one, considering having someone make a mold out of it to repair my old one for someone else to use. so far I have not learned to weld, think I will need to do that. others have noted how they built rotisseries from HF engine stands, etc. it will be a while before I make the decision to buy the rotisserie, but have decided I will. for $800 not sure taking the time and effort to build one is worth what I would save. can sell when done if I dont think I'll be doing something like THIS project again. getting too old.... update to the project. well I kNOW the WSM assumes you already know a lot. am finding a few missed details in Wayne's book. after removing the cam nuts, say to pull the cam sprockets, etc. and THEN remove the tensioners. after thinking a bit, I believe the missing step is compress the tensioner and insert retaining pins. now you can get the can sprockets off as the chains are loose. move along..... |
while waiting for some parts for the 944S, went back to work on the 930.
once I get the case stripped down to just the crank and rods, shipping to Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems to do the bottom end. along with the heads. still has original divlar studs so they all come off for replacement. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1455631587.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1455631611.jpg |
thanks to KYCARGUY, I have a good DP/Kremer tail. will make a mold from it to ultimately repair the other one and sell someday.
930 work continues between work on the 944S, almost done, and the suspension for the 951 DE car before the first event. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1456151679.jpg |
during short breaks on the 944S project waiting for parts, got one of the heads off.
but now starting the suspension upgrade on the 951 so the 930 will have to wait a bit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1457880502.jpg |
well.... getting back to work on this project.
got all the heads off the cam towers. yesterday, got all the cyl/pistons/rods and head studs removed. as this engine was fully rebuilt in 1990, all came off easily. need to check the ring clearance to see if it is likely I can reuse the cyl/pistons. they all came out looking good, but the feeler gauge will tell...... need to pack this stuff all up and ship to Steve Weiner for full refresh. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1463322930.jpg |
more progress getting the parts ready to pack up. everything came apart pretty easy, including the studs. engine had been rebuilt in 1990.
bolted the heads to a board. I hope I can reuse the pistons/cyl, but will let Steve verify. measured the compression ring clearance. think only two are near the limit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1464099153.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1464099186.jpg |
well time for an update.
unfortunately for this project, I have mostly been working on the other cars. but in between continued the tear down. got the windshield pulled and the tub almost stripped. almost have the wiring harnesses pulled. just sent Timmy2 (Dennis) an email it is time for us to link up on having him build a full set of wiring harnesses. after checking the ring clearance, found two at/above the wear limit on the compression ring. fortunately a local Porsche master mechanic/friend has a set of P&Cs from a 3.4 upgrade project I am buying. only 24k miles on them and all in exec shape. also got a set of front, raise spindle stuts and F/R bilstein revalved shocks from the same friend. I am retiring end of Sept and have pulled back to part time until then. so anticipating more personal time to do more work on this project. hope to be posting updates with progress. |
in between other projects, DE track events, and the endless 'honey do' list, have been getting in some work on the 930.
been disassembling the suspension parts, cleaning, etc. should be getting a box of parts in the next day or two. finally about to ship off the case to Steve Weiner at Rennsport systems to fully rebuild. but for today, off to the shop to finish a AC compressor swap on the 944S and get the 951 loaded in the trailer to go to 944fest at Nelson Ledges 8/3-5. will post more when I have the pics of the work. |
OK, here are a few pics.
going through a lot of parts I had already bought before I decided on a full restore. then pics of some of the suspension parts I cleaned, blasted, and painted. going to have the front A arms done in PC black. just finished replacing the AC compressor in the 944S. and about to start preping the 928 for a paint job. off to the 944Fest at Nelson Ledges in two weeks in the 951. and planning on getting into more work on the 930. next up is cleaning/painting the oil tank. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532286727.jpg the two P&Cs are the old worn ones from the car. I blasted the outside and painted. I got a new full set of P&C, well slightly used 26k miles. need to epoxy a bottom on the cyl for beer mugs. seal the little oil holes in the pistons and they may make a good double-shot glass. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532286727.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532286759.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532286759.jpg new turbo tie rods for the SC rack. and wheel bearings. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532286759.jpg full set of fuel lines from Len Cummings, plastic tunnel lines not shown. along with the new fuel pumps, filter, and accumulator. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532286759.jpg |
Nice. Your cleaned and painted parts look great.
I’m going to be embarking on a similar project soon. I just put down a deposit on a 77 tub. I just happen to have a spare 930 motor and trans. ;-) |
I still need a 930 trans. otherwise, I think I have most of the stuff. sending out the case to Rennsport systems for rebuild, then the heads. then need the rebuild kit/gaskets, etc. etc.
still have not decided on color. good luck on your build. will look for your thread. |
Thanks.
There was one in f/s section awhile ago. I don’t recall the price but it seemed to be a good deal. I think it was rebuilt and as far as I know he didn’t sell it. It wasn’t a early model (short b/h) but those are getting pretty hard to find without giving up a kidney or your first born. IIRC it was at a shop that was capable of shortening it. |
time for some updates.
first is to say I sold my 85 911 that I had owned for 27 yrs recently, along with the 87 944S. too many cars sucking up my time and now that I am retired this 930 is going to start eating money. I would never have sold that 911, my first P car, if I was not building this 930. actually I have been working on parts. some cleaning, bead blasting, etc. in between work on other cars and the challenges of life. getting ready to ship the case and heads to Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems now that I have the funds. already have the heads bolted to a board. will also be sending my P&Cs, got a used set from a local Porsche master mechanic that only had 26k miles. he had done a 3.4 upgrade. my P&Cs were in bad shape. also rods, rocker arms, etc. for refurb and to allow Steve to balance the rods to the piston as much as reasonable. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543761349.JPG had the A arms powder coated. installing new ER rubber bushings and new ball joints. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543761429.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543761429.JPG new ER sport rubber rear training arm bushings. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543761429.JPG and a set of RSR raised spindle front struts with F/R revalved Bilsteins from the same guy as P&Cs. they could accommodate coil overs but not planning that. keeping torsion bars. toying with idea of using mild coils with a compatible set of torsion bars. but keep reading how this can make it harder to set up the suspension. we'll see, but definitely not planning full coil over. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543761429.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543761429.JPG new wheel bearings and races installed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543761429.JPG got a replacement pedal set. ironically the only place I have found rust on this car was the pedal cluster and floor area. I was going to refresh but just cannot get that pin out to disassemble. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543761429.JPG new turbo tie rods on refinished steering rack. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543761429.JPG |
here are the heads ready to be boxed up.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543763751.jpg sending the fan and housing to Shaun @TRU6 to refinish in Cerakote (?) those other parts will be stripped and Powder coated by a local PC shop. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1543763751.JPG going to shop to finish getting the case, heads, P&C, rods, rocker arms, etc packet for shipping. then step back and figure out what to attack next. :D but also need to get the 944 turbo track car in to fix the broken clutch before DE next spring. it will be sold once I get the 930 done. |
after thinking about it I realized if the box was dropped on the side using wood blocks to brace the case could allow the force to get passed to the case and cause damage.
so pulled them and repacked with foam insulation. already had 2" of foam sheets on the bottom and putting one on top. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545058032.JPG cleaned and buffed the alum injector blocks, getting new injectors. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545058116.JPG pulled the rings and cleaned the carbon off the tops of the pistons. sending to Steve to balance with the rods when he refurbs them and rebuilds the case/crank/rods. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545058116.JPG after having it stripped, hit the bottom of the CIS air box with a light coat of cast alum VHT engine paint. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545058116.JPG sending this to Shaun to replate the spring plate stuff and the fan housing strap. and creakote the hub along with the fan/housing http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545058116.JPG |
Man you’re going all in. Gonna be super nice.
|
yea... I passed the event horizon a couple years ago.
|
I’m in the same boat my friend.
|
after acquiring this project, read too many threads on this forum. the more I read what others were doing to their 930s the deeper I got pulled in.
|
digging through and cleaning/preping more stuff.
fan/housing stripped to go to Shaun at Tru6, along with spring plate hw and some fuel lines. the last will go to Len Cummings to rebuild the cam chain tensioner oil lines, and have him plate the hard lines in the process. Len made a full set of fuel lines for me in the past. great work. probably be at the shop for a while again today... never know what I'll dig out next. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545402979.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545402979.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545402979.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545402979.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545402979.JPG |
got everything shipped but the case. I guess the box I made took the weight >150lb limit for UPS. will have it shipped by R&L.
continuing to dig stuff out, clean, etc. accumulating another box of stuff to send to Shaun for plating. and need to box up the lines to send to Len. just pulled the 928 in to rebuild all the brake calipers. recently one of the rear was dragging a bit, never rebuilt them. and will keep at it on the 930 parts too. cleaned/buffed the oil cooler and oil line. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547044687.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547044687.JPG cleaned the valve covers, light coat of cast alum VHT paint on the lower and buffed the upper. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547045099.JPG this is a teaser. pic of a couple brackets I am fab'ing, these are not the final version. they are at the PC shop. you will NEVER guess what they are for. hope to post the surprise pic in a few days. :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547045099.JPG |
Home brew engine tin ?
|
security threat???
my norton keeps popping up with warnings this site is not safe. says their HTTPS security cert expired yesterday. being a retired network engineer I have encountered this many times over the years. someone misses the notice to renew. in general not a real security issue, just annoying to keep bypassing.
and get errors when trying to upload pics. took a couple tries. Ahhh... we have a player. hint: I have mentioned what they will be used for in the past on this thread. well... have to repack the case as with my stout wooden crate it was >150lb. Steve assures me it can be packed safely at <150lb. got a double walled cardboard box at uhaul that should work. just line all sides with several layers of 1" foam insulation sheets. hopefully will get it out monday. in the mean time, decided to rebuild all of the calipers on the 928. noticed some dragging recently. when rebuilding found the culprit, one of the rears had become pretty gummy. and found a couple of the damper sleeves on the front calipers damage, waiting for replacements from Germany. wanted to get this buttoned up to get started fixing the clutch on the 951 track car. also took all of the engine tins and engine mount parts for powder coat. they look OK as I had previously just hit them with a light coat of paint. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547823052.JPGhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547823219.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1547823423.JPG |
:eek:I had all my engine tin powder coated also. It looks fantastic. However if I had thought it through I would have done something a bit different.
There a several large holes in the side tin that are no longer needed, ie holes for emissions air pump and so forth. Instead of unsightly tape to close these, I made up some aluminum blanks, painted them black and pop riveted them on. But I did this after getting the tin back. Next time (next time?) I'll flush rivet them on and do it before sending out for powder coating. |
Hmm... did not think about that, but too late for me.
|
got that batch of stuff back from PC.
and here is the use for those mystery brackets. Beer / Coffee mug out of one of the bad cylinders! unfortunately I need to find another kind of glue for the clear plexi-glass bottom. after a couple of freezer/beer cycles the expansion/contraction had causes it to leak. will use some kind of flexible cement to fix. and after reboxing that case was able to ship via UPS at 135lb. also got the 951 into the shop from the trailer to get to work on the clutch. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1548790292.JPG |
awesome progress
cool mug - was gonna guess... trunk monkey keep up the good werk - busy boy there on 3x cars... oy. Nothanks lol (Fightclub mantra: you do not own your possessions - YOUR POSSESSIONS OWN YOU!!!) |

I found a neat little cup insert which slipped into the cylinder. I could pull it apart to wash it. |

continue to make progress. finally pulled the last of the wiring harness out the back. need to write up my plans and send it all to Dennis for a custom harness build.
in an exchange with blacktie motors trying to figure out if one of the RX7 headlight conversions will work. also pulled the last of the glass out, not as much trouble as I expected. maybe because the car had a glass out repaint in the past. and tore the headliner out and scrapped the old dash covering (not sure what to call it). I got a brushed aluminum set to replace this, think I showed it in the thread in the past. not sure yet if I will leave the exposed, painted metal dash areas or cover. and got this pic in an email from Shaun at TRU6. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550329100.jpg these are the headlights I am considering. they are fixed and just look SINISTER. :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550329100.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550329100.JPG found these little clips at the top of the front windshield when pulling the headliner. never saw a reference to these in other headliner replacement threads, just LOTs of those little spring clips. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550329100.JPG getting read to remove the sunroof assembly. seems straight forward but need to research posts to see if there are any gotchas. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550329100.JPG old wiring harness to go to Dennis. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550329100.JPG |
yesterday I got the sunroof out. using a battery I tried testing the motor. it ran and could see the gear turning and moving the rods. seemed it would close but not open. but when I ran it to the open position I could open the roof manually.
so pulled the motor and related parts, then removed the track and pulled the whole roof panel out. broken connectors preventing it from opening but would allow it to push the roof closed. after reading a good thread on removing the sunroof, next step is to start cutting away the supports. so now I have a complete sunroof assembly for sale, just need to get new rods. make me an offer. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550417937.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550417937.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550417937.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550417937.JPG |

Regarding the fixed headlights.. try these guys https://www.zeemax.com/Porsche.htm Back in the 90's they had a pretty nice set of fixed headlights that were available as a set or as part of their body kit. They don't show it on their site anymore.. but who knows what a call or email may turn-up? |
got a reply from zeemax and they do not have fixed headlight kits.
yesterday got the sunroof false ceiling cut out. will need to do some more trimming before ready to accept a panel. just got the parts for my 951 and should have them for the 928 shortly. so will turn my attention to getting both of those cars fixed. and I am still looking for a source for a carbon fiber roof panel insert that I plan to just bond in place and leave the CF panel exposed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550673053.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550673053.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1550673053.JPG |
