even tough I have not done much on the 930 I have been very busy over the winter.
finally got the 928 brakes fixed by replacing everything incl MC. started due to right rear dragging, long story. now in process of complete rebuild of the AC system. thought I had the 951 ready for DE in march but decided to find the source of a small coolant leak. found what I was afraid of, head gasket. after breaking bolts and fighting the head off the 951 find cyl 2 is badly scoured. now have that engine out looking for a good short block to rebuild. but back to this project. after searching for the past couple years I finally bought a short bell housing 930 gearbox. the PO had removed the gearbox stub axles and installed in a different 930 gearbox. in process of finding a set. but by mistake I bought a set of the banana arm 930 stub axles. well probably need them too. question for this forum. if I get proper gearbox and banana arm 930 stub axles, get a set of 930 axles to match? I have a set of carerra 3.2 axles. remember this is an SC tub. got an email off to my mentor Steve Weiner about this. I have already refurbed the banana arms and installed new wheel bearings. and got an email Steve is about to start the work on my case, heads, etc.:D Shaun at tru-6 has finished cerakoting my fan/housing and oil tank, along with all the replating. will be shipping all tomorrow. so what's next? get the rotisserie from my friend and get the shell mounted so we can drag it out to the side lot and media blast it and the primer the tub. I am getting excited that this jig saw puzzle is starting to come together. and my friend moved into the other portion of the shop in Jan. he is a mercedes trained mechanic, mainly/prefers to work on older MB. and had the 928buckeyelandsharks 928 club come to the shop, kabitz a while then lunch at the Ludlow/Bromley Yacht club across the street. in case you are not familiar with 928s, nickname is 'shark' LBYC has a big great white shark on posts in from. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1559487203.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1559487203.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1559487203.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1559487203.jpg |
got the 930 gearbox yesterday, and the flange axles are on the way.
and heard Steve is starting work on all my engine stuff I sent him to refresh. but in the short term working on cleaning the head/cam tower to be ready to rebuild the 951 engine when I find a good block. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1560257826.JPG |

Looking good!
|
Good job !!!
|
I posted a WTB for the clutch arms and omega spring. anyone got them?
|
got the clutch parts.
hope to get some post with build ideas. finally moving in that direction... :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1561555660.JPG |
got tired of waiting for my friend's rotisserie.... so got one.
now need to determine how to mount the tub to it. suggestions? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565355848.JPG |
searched and found several threads about mounting on rotisserie. several use the bumper shock tubes.
so sat down and looked and measured and came up with this. found a heavy pipe that would just fit inside the support beams. a bit smaller than the shock tube so wrapped in some heavy rubber. hope to get it in the air today. :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565441707.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565441707.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565441707.JPG |
now the real fun begins....
first to scrape the stuff of the inside floor boards before hauling out to the side lot to blast clean. thinking I'll use paint remove on the body panels first. then only need a very light touch with the blasting to completely clean with reduced risk of warping anything. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565530284.JPG |
:)
Thats a PRO rotisserie if I ever saw one. Congrats! Keep up the good work. Len :) |
yep. Titan 4500 lb.
|
Should end up an awesome project I'll be looking forward to watching
|
Bob,
Are you trying to leave the galvanized surface intact, or just blast it off? Of course the galvanize layer would be gone where any fender flare or slantnose fender mods were done. |
good question. I guess if I blast to metal it will probably affect the galvanize. I plan to use chem remover on the body panels. don't know what I'll find on the rear flares, they are welded metal. and dont know if the Golden Coachworks aftermarket front slope fenders were galvanized.
|
Bob,
No, the Golden Coachworks panels were not galvanized. Also had to grind the galvanize off along the weld line for good welds. I saved all the galvanize coating I could when I painted my car, just make sure to use an etching primer for those areas. |
got the sound deadening stuff off the floors. not as hard as I feared. most came off using a putty knife and only had to use the heat gun on the area by the left foot rest area.
so go over it and cover up a few things like the steering column and get ready to blast. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567518299.JPG |
Man, this project started slow but now you're really up to full steam.
Great write ups and very interesting. Keep up the good work and even though a lot of us don't reply much, there are a bunch of people following this thread so please keep on updating. Thanks Tony |
Tony,
thanks! the problem has always been I had too many cars / projects when I bought this one.... been looking it over to identify what areas I will tape to keep sand out. hit another speed bump on my 951 track car. got another engine and opened it up only to find cyl scouring. the guy from whom I got it has others and will swap out, but wants to open them up find a good one before I come swap out the bad block. I bought a 87 924S intending to pull that engine to use the block. but after is sitting for a couple years it started! so found the other engine to use and will try to resurrect this turd too. so in the short term, finally helping a friend resurrect his 84 944. got it running, bad fuel pump relay AND corroded fuel pump fuse. we're rebuilding the brakes, new brake lines, replace engine bay fuel lines, and all fluids. hope to get it back on the street by end of next week. next step on the 930, drag it out to the side lot and blast it. friend's project, wish I had taken pics of the goo we found in the brake calipers. but pistons good so rebuilding http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567776969.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567776969.JPG my 924S project. nickname 'the creature from the black lagoon' and sometimes 'The Turd'. auto trans with bad flex plate. plan to fix and gut into another track car... I just could not believe it when I started. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567776969.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567776969.JPG |

well about to get this paint job on the way.
got a big pressurized blaster but need to decide and get the media. started thinking soda, but read about the residue issue affecting paint adhesion. just tried a little shot of walnut shells. worked great, but need to read some more to determine if they also cause paint adhesion issues. found the most recommendations were for plastic bead, but a bit expensive. drag it out to our side lot and if I use plastic lay down a large area of tarps to capture as much as I can. if I go walnut shells, will just let it go into the gravel... soon ..... very soon ...... test was just a few seconds at 90psi. encouraging. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569697655.JPG |
and so it begins......
plan to start blasting with walnut shells today. and keep covered when not working on it. I expect this to take a few days.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569846893.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569846893.JPG |
after some false starts trying to figure out what works, starting to make progress.
got some stripper, turns out the 'good stuff' is being recalled, but found some. when applying the stripper, wiped off after setting for a bit, then tried blasting with walnut shells. initially got the course stuff that clogged in the blast gun. then got the fine stuff and it worked better, but still tended to clog occasionally. finally resorted to 80 grit glass bead. the stripper takes the paint off right now. but the underlying primer is tough. even after spraying with stripper it fights you. so I am now leaning toward just going to fine sand. but still use stripper first. next effort will be using just stripper on the roof, see how much I can get off that way. then I will not have to hit the car hard with the sand, just blast over it lightly to finish off what the stripper did not get. will strip the exterior body but not sure how hard I will work on the interior / engine bay / trunk / etc. areas. may just sand blast lightly to make sure anything loose comes off. talked to the painter and he said not to worry too much about those areas. once clean and all loose stuff gone, clean and paint. but FINALLY we are getting some much needed rain, so will be a couple days before I get back to it. in part my 41st anniversary is Monday, so spend the day with the wife and take her out for a nice dinner. to be continued ....... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570369773.JPG |
eventually I just sand blasted. despite one of the strippers saying epoxy, it barely had an effect on the primer. and then when I got to the bondo where the fender flares had been welded even the sand took some time.
at this point I have the exterior of the tub clean. today starting on the interior, then engine bay, then trunk. hope to get this back into the shop in the next few days. then start the cleaning process. and heard from Steve Weiner my engine and brake parts are in process and should start getting stuff shipped back soon. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571492267.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571492267.JPG |
continued progress. outside done. most of the trunk done and the floor of the interior. hopefully finish the blasting phase in the next couple days. then go back with sand paper and grinder to get the little blobs of rubber / sealer / etc off where needed.
I am going to so much work because I am planning the have the interior pretty spartan and race car like. so want all the potentially visible interior metal totally clean as it will be painted in body color. and you can see my daily sand reclamation process on the first pic. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571933460.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571933460.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571933460.JPG |
I've been down this road twice and don't envy you! Used a commercial blasting yard though, went quick. The sand keeps coming out, exactly as other people describe. Lots of compressed air and blow guns with extended nozzles followed with a vacuum.
In the end it's satisfying knowing first hand that nothing is hiding under the paint. Rock on! |
thanks. so far I have not found any significant rust. this is the second time this car went through a sand blast. other guy did not go as far as I have and as I disassembled some areas found sand behind interior parts.

well I think I am done blasting. after finishing the outside body and the interior, took a shot at the engine bay. it seems the engine bay and fenders are all finished with some rubbery feeling surface. the sand barely phases is. I had not intended to strip the under side undercoating. but also looks like something similar is used in these other areas.
so today start getting the sand out and roll this thing back into the shop to continue the cleaning and where necessary grinding. |
got it back in the shop. now to continue getting rid of the sand, use grinder where needed, then start cleaning for primer / paint.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1572379086.JPG |
as usual, my poor 930 is "sucking hind teet' again. need to get a customer's 944 issues and maintenance done first.
turning the tub on its side on the rotisserie fees up a lot of space. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1572727926.JPG |
I have started the final grinding, sanding, cleaning phase.
when all else fails .... inside engine bay, trying to get the old foam and glue off where the pad was glued in. I am sure there is some chemical products that would work but now back inside and not wanting to deal with fumes. not planning to take many of the area that have some rubber undercoat to metal. but tried using sanding / abrasive disks on this and the glue just seemed to smear around and quickly clog the pads. first of my parts on the way from Rennsport Systems... :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1573826292.JPG |
making good progress.
burned out the grinder shown, it was old and had been acting like it was on its last leg, but I have another... and think I have worn down or bent over the prongs on that nasty wire wheel shown. not getting stuff off as fast. it is incredible how much putty they smeared all over the inside seams. looks like they applied with a large trowel, looked like 1/2" thick in places. but hey, they were just going to spray on a lot of glue and install carpets, so who cares? I want to get as much as I can to metal and do any seam putty work as concentrated and clean as possible. Why? want to paint the interior same as body color and do not plan to install carpet and other coverings. leave as much interior metal showing as possible, expect where it is just too ugly. going very spartan on the interior and want to keep the weight down. friend coming today to help me with shop vac and blow gun to get as much sand out of the channels and confined spaces as possible. and still have some further grinding to do. then talk to the painter about how to proceed with cleaning / sanding. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1574004121.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1574004121.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1574004567.JPG |
got my modified rear 930 calipers.
and continued work on the tub.... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1574612926.JPG |
Looking good, As you now know. It's nice to your Porsche, inch by inch. Keep on sending us pic's. Happy Thanksgiving.

continuing to grind off the putty/glue/etc where necessary, mainly the interior.
got a gal of cleaner to start that phase shortly. and went back to cutting out all the sun roof cassette. pics for someone who asked about the courtesy light parts of roof rails. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1575491308.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1575491308.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1575491308.JPG and rebuild another set of calipers for another 944. same goo I found in the last set of calipers. maybe factory original????? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1575491591.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1575491591.JPG |
well got the 944 done and when waiting on parts have been also working on the 930.
we're going to be in the low 50s the next few days and I'll be dragging the 930 just outside the bay to do a little more sand blasting. found some areas around the rear torsion tube and the front fenders that could use a little more work. not taking them to metal but get as much surface dirt off before I start with cleaner. in retrospect, wish I had first power washed the bottom and wheel wells before I started sand blasting. interior almost done. also been playing with the calipers. looks like I need slightly longer bolts for the rears. now need to figure out what rotors to order. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1576951101.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1576951101.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1576951338.JPG |
good day yesterday and hope to finish this last bit of blasting today.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1577027217.JPG |
I stumbled on a 78 930 clone, built on a 78 SC in the 1989 - 1990 time frame. got it almost a year ago, just could not pass it up. took some crap from my wife about it, as it made the 5th P car I had at the time. just finishing the resurrection of an 87 944S for my bro-in-law, and had not even started work on the 951 DE/street build.

??? got my rennline sunroof delete panel. just in time to send to the body shop when I send the tub for paint. hoping to be done with the blasting today. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1577109830.JPG |
