I remember there is a setting in the past that if you set at 0 or 100, or 0% or 100% that will flood the engine.
I'd look in the MegaManual for that to see. |
Plug gap spec is 0.028-0.031". Sounds like yours are a bit wide. The MSD will probably jump that gap but you are pushing limits with compression and boost on top of that. Which Bosch plugs do you have? I usually run NGK BPR6ES copper plugs.
The only thing (hardware related) that would cause the injectors to open would be loss of power to the injectors. 12V should keep them shut. The ECU will pull the injector to ground causing them to open and squirt fuel. Related to IAT correction. Since you have MS2 are you running B&G or MS Extra firmware? If MSE what are your settings for Non-Linear MAT Correction? IF you have a flat line (0%) this will not work for an IAT sensor installation in the intercooler. When the boost heats up the air the IAT will actually pull fuel since it thinks air density is reduced due to temperature. It is always good practice to reflash the tune file if you have updated base code or firmware. It is also good practice to calibrate all of the sensors after a firmware flash. MSExtra will retain some of the tune and calibration parameters but each revision is slightly different. Sounds like you need to start from scratch and reload your previous tune files. |
Yea, I reloaded my last working firmware files and she fired right up. A little rich but at least I'm back to the beginning. I found an old thread you helped me with on MSII Extra 3.4x and there were ignition settings I had to do. I never did check them this time around but I had already switched back. I think I'm just going to say screw it and get the new MS3 box and go from there. I'll keep the MSII ECU as emergency backup.
Thanks for the help. I'll re-gap the plugs now. They're the Bosch Super Plus 7992 WR 5 DC. At least that what it says on the box. I had NGK's in their before. |
Kyle, glad the car is running again.
IMO the only reason to go to MS3 is if you have run out of I/O ports or are set on full sequential. The fueling and spark algorithms are not different enough for me to switch. I have yet to run out of ports using MS2. Even on my Subaru/914 running sequential ignition I was still running MS2 with full boost control. Its highly capable. Plus, the MS3 box form factor is too tall and does not fit in most of the usual locations. I wish they had a box that was wide and flat rather than narrow and tall. |
Ms3
Good to know. I still don't feel all warm and fuzzy with the MSII box I have. I just lost a little confidence in it. Not Megasquirt in general, I know they're great systems, just the ECU I have. The recent events with the Coolant Sensor going out (Then re flashing) to have it come up again was weird. Having a 2nd MSII on the shelf (or with me on board the car) would be a nice feeling. The MSII ECU itself isn't that expensive.
Anyway. Onward with the turbo tuning for now. It's so crappy out in Washington it's difficult to get a reasonably nice day to test and tune. It's just not fun testing in the rain with a new turbo. |
Tps
Quote:
Do you guys use a TPS? If so, is their a significant control advantage? Especially for a boost application. I have the Carrera manifold with the original TPS still mounted that isn't being used. |
The stock 3.2 does not have a TPS. It has a WOT switch. There are multiple threads about the swap to a TPS. YOu just need to make a small adapter plate.
I normally tune on MAP (speed density) This is pretty much required for any boosted application. The TPS is used for enrichment during throttle transitions. There are plenty of cases when you need to look at changes in throttle position because your manifold pressure has minimal changes. Now, go tune that car... Where are you in WA? I was up there last week. |
He's about 40 mins south of Redmond. Next time lets plan on getting the peeps together for dinner.

Jamie- runs MUCH better with the plug gap back to normal. Not sure where I heard to open the gap up under N/A... must have been an MSD suggestion back when I installed it. |

I have my TPS adapter that mounts a BMW TPS from any early-mid '90's model except the 318 if you want. It's free because I milled it too thin by a hair requiring washers to space it out. If you want it, just cover shipping. |

I'm bored at the office and about to go on vacation for 2 weeks. So I started doodling...

And there's the "how to turbo an SC cheap n easy" FAQ the world has been whining for. Great work!

Sorry Eric...brain fart!

Do you need a scavege pump for the oil feed to the turbocharger? BTW- I Love this thread!! |
DZLNDAN: So far no scavenge pump needed.
Here's my current solution to fitting the IC under the duck tail. You can't really tell the screen has been raised slightly. It's very subtle: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450758627.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450758650.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450758669.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450758693.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450758725.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450758748.jpg |
This thread is what my dreams are made of. Now to go back in time 10 years and find a $12k SC to do this to.

Oh, and I only paid 10k 7 years ago. I think I have more fun driving her than worrying about a $25,000+ original SC sitting under a dust cover in the garage. Don't get me wrong, if I did pick it up and she was 'perfectly stock' with no accidents or issues, I probably wouldn't be on the turbo forum posting this. |
Absolutely no sarcasm at all... I really mean it. All i meant was: this looks like an awesome project, but cars to do awesome projects to seem to be scarce these days, at least for what I would consider reasonable project car money. I think you are doing an incredible job with this and no hate at all whether it started as a busted tub or something you paid 30k for... Its still doing the car justice. I think porsches are meant to be hot rodded and not stock. Just my opinion. Kudos and carry on doing awesome stuff to this car.

Anyhow... If one could find a nice SC for $15K I'd be all over this kind of project. |
