How to accentuate the WHOOSH of the turbo?
My exhaust is loud... I can't hear the turbo spool up, or even hear it when it blows off... For all intents my car sounds like a non-turbo...
Drove as a passenger in a 965 turbo... it was clearly making whistling sounds under acceleration, and whooshing sounds under blow off... Heck, even my friends stock SUV with twin turbos makes whooshing sounds when you apply throttle, even parked... How does one correct this, to make the turbo sounds more pronounced? Remove the blow off muffler? Add on a megaphone instead of a muffler? What? I know Brian makes a Zork, but I think that's for the exhaust side... Anyone have any solutions, home made or otherwise? I have a Tig/Mig/and soon a plasma cutter at my disposal ....

gut the stock exhaust or replace it with an aftermarket unit

Stock exhaust is long gone... Car has a 930 to 965 body update on it with a custom 2 out exhaust that is very free flowing... burbles, pops, etc. Sounds like a lot of the 930 exhausts I hear on youtube.
But I cant hear the turbo. To be fair, I don't hear it on the youtube videos either... Are you saying you can hear your turbo with stock wastegate muffler? |

Removing the wastegate muffler won't do anything with regard to hearing the turbo - you just hear the blaring exaust sound more clearly when on full boost.
If you replace the stock, mail-box air filter housing with a cone filter directly on the air metering housing throat, then the intake air "whoooosh" becomes much more audible inside the cabin (particularly with the windows up) - sounds very good. You won't hear any blow off valve woosh with the stock set up, since it does not vent pressure to atmosphere at closed throttle (like most non-CIS fuel system turbos do). You would have to modify the system, or replace it with a different one, that vents closed throttle boost pressure to atmosphere, but then that affects the air-to-fuel ratio during sudden, closed throttle. I can't hear my turbo either - a K27 HyFlow doesn't create any kind of turbine noise that I can hear, but some other type turbos do. Last edited by Rawknees'Turbo; 08-09-2016 at 12:17 PM.. |

Put a Borg-Warner turbo on there, it'll sound like a jet engine. Holset's sound like whistles.

This will accentuate the bypass valve sound: 930 high flow air cleaner

And to address the turbo whistle issue of the OP: Zork tube = heaven on Earth. RarlyL8's Hooligan muffler is a milder version of a Zork ... I can still hear the turbo whistle but I don't want to smash my brains out with a hammer after driving 300mi in a day. |

Now that is really strange since people who have also done that say that it produces a very rich, sudden closed throttle situation that results in flame blasts out of the tailpipe. Wonder why yours is different?

I could never hear my 7006, nor can I hear the current stock 3LDZ. No whining or whistling, but strange when I listen to someones video I can hear the turbo spooling up. I've just chalked it up to being tone deaf in the higher frequencies. Happens when you work in a noisy environment even with hearing protection....and of course happens regardless when you reach old fartdom.
Somewhat off topic, but being deaf in the higher frequencies has it's advantages when you're being ragged on by the opposite sex (no offense to you 930 girls out there hiding behind the scenes). Though there are times when I wish I was low freq deaf for opposite though similar reasons.

Ball bearing Garrett turbos whistle plenty and work nice. I had a k27 7200 HFS and it had no whistle I could hear and I've had a couple k27 7006's. They whistle nice with a free flow or gutted baffle muffler but come on boost 300 to 500 rpm later than most smaller hot side turbos.

I've played around a lot with my systems and different turbos to capture the sounds you want and abate the general noise level sound you don't want. This is going to sound odd but one of the most whizy turbos I've tested is the stock 3LDZ. Any type of sound wave dampening will kill the turbo whiz first. Our street mufflers have a little burble with a muscle tone, Hooligan pops, cackles and burbles with a slight whiz, Outlaw is full whiz as it has no sound absorbing features except the length of tailpipe which reduces noise level. I'm working on a hybrid now that will do both, hope to have it in testing very soon.
The K&N cone filter mod will add a nice pre-spool air intake sound which I like. Venting the BOV to atmosphere only makes noise if you have a BOV that is designed to make noise. The flame throwing between shifts can happen if all of the air recirculation devices are removed, such as the throttle bypass valve. Muffler has to be hot and fuel on the rich side.

Interesting... I have to find the owner of the car I drove in, to find out what he has. I know he has Brians exhaust, but don't know which one.
Mine is pretty much an open exhaust, and the car almost sounds V8-ish when you stand behind it. Crackles, pops, etc are there... Turbo whoosh, not so much... The 965 was clearly making whooshing sounds the whole time, while accelerating... sounded really cool. Don't know what Turbo he had in there... |

my '87 mit 3LDZ / RL8 Hoonigan whistled audibly, not profusely but a good whistle
now mit 0.83 Garrett / ITS monster via ZORK... oh man. As Alex coined whilst traveling behind me... EARGASM. There's nothing better then the unabashed sound of a Zork. Really, it's only loud @ idle, slow troll, and WOT. Part throttle cruise, it's near silent believe it or not. My only challenges are - say - pulling up my street cold in 1st gear... ugh... the turbo whistle is SO LOUD it's... um... LOUD. Yeah. The slower you go the longer it lasts the louder it is... the faster you go, well... the louder it gets but least it's over quicker. Upshift to a bog'd 2nd only makes it more blub blub blub on top of the whistle. Did I mention the whistle is ear piercingly loud? Exhibit A (vid quality BLOWS DONG - like Rawknees daily, but gives you a great audible), exact scenario with bailing out of 1st quickly and bogging 2nd trying (uneffectively) to temper the noise. Note - this is shot at least 100' from curbside from my neighbor's front door heh heh (he'd complain... alas, he runs a Raptor w/ open downpipe dump. NASCAR JNR): Making friends everywhere I go, certainly. Muwhahahahaa. Perfect. Do you run headers? Switching to those very much DID exacerbate the turbo whine, before I went Zork. Very much do dig the open air filter atop the metering plate. Makes for some good bong-rip type noises on accel. And the open dump BOV is comedy... quick WHOOSH upon throttle lift, not Subie rice-a-roni, thankfully... just blissful noise. Btw, did someone say FLAMES!? Shot me some good lingering 3footers caravan'ing home Mon from local car show w/ my neighbors in tow in their toys. They were exclamating something fierce about them once we got home, said the flames just hang there. Just Not Right. NO regrets on the Zork. Nothing but sheer 930 goodness. The SC cam'd idle crackle thru a hot pipe... oh man - JIMP! HTH 8-) Last edited by krasuskyp; 08-10-2016 at 05:46 AM.. |

I just did this, this past weekend in preparation for a new intercooler. I can attest that this does increase the sound level of the turbo somewhat. In fact, other than space, its the only difference (not that I was expecting anything else).

I also have a borla exhaust. my car has kind of a whistle sound when I am on it hard, not what I expect or like from ther inside but others say it sounds really good from outside. I also cant hear my WG open even with an open pipe on it.
