I think I am making the leap!
Good evening gentlemen. I think I may be setting out on the path to force induction.
If all works out, I'll be picking up a setup from a fellow member here this weekend. The setup was removed from a working car about a month ago, and I was told it ran well. It has a large Protomotive IC, and I would like to keep my ducktail. While I may remove the lid to do the initial install and trouble shoot/tune, I thought it might be wise to go ahead and source a small or more compact IC to begin with and do any necessary plumbing changes during the initial install. Can anyone recommend a IC that would work? The tail is one I had Stratton make for me a few years ago. On another note, the setup was reportedly making over 400hp (400-500hp) at a little over 1bar, if I recall correctly. My plan is to run well under that. The car currently runs really well, and I love it!! I just remember the sensation as a child of my dad's '76 930, and would like to make the move to have just a little of that sense of torque rush/delivery. It's a stock '86 3.2l, us delivery as far as I know. Thinking of setting it up for maybe .5-.7bar. What would that be....in the neighborhood of 325-350hp? Any suggestions for a known IC that would fit under my tail? here are some pics of the car btw: ![]() ![]() Last edited by chrisf; 04-07-2016 at 03:12 PM.. |

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think .7 bar boost with the stock compression ratio on a naturally aspirated 3.2L is possible. Even .5 sounds like it would be on the very edge of engine survival???
Detonation would be a real concern here, and detonation is the kiss of death. Others with WAYYYY more knowledge will hopefully chime in here with advise. Mark |

I have read that a stock intercooler can fit under a ducktail with some slight grinding down of the intercooler.
Here is the car that I saw it done on: 78 Turbo duck tail for sale (18k orig. mi.) - Rennlist Discussion Forums I have an extra stock one I'd sell for a reasonable price if you are interested. There are other more expensive options. I know Chris at Turbokraft has custom made some intercoolers to fit under ducktails too. Uwon also built a 3.2L based turbo car with an intercooler under a ducktail: Evolution of a Carrera RST

Im running .8 bar on my 9.5:1 set up. its a 3.1 short stroke with carrera heads, intake, etc. I have had no detonation problems, but i am currently running e-85 with fairly conservative timing.

According to Protomotive, 350-375hp from 0.5 on a stock 3.2 is possible.

Cool car. What color is it? Silver? Ice green metallic? One other nuance with running an IC without a tea tray is the absence of the louvers. The current tail may work well for engine cooling but the tea tray also served to direct air through the IC. I'm pretty sure this has been addressed in the board somewhere. It may not even come into play in your build given the relatively low boost level contemplated. Duck tails are bad *ss IMHO and even badder with an IC lurking underneath.
Good luck! |

You can hack up a stock intercooler and it will fit.
But you can also get someone to fab up a full bay intercooler that lays super flat like a 993TT. There was a popular article a few years back about a guy with a 964 coupe with a ducktail who got a 993TT motor to fit. I think he slightly modified the tail to accommodate the stock 993 intercooler, but if you were to have a custom one fabbed up it could be made to your dimensions without any issue. |

Thanks for the replies, guys.
The car is IGM. 5.5 year restore/backdate project I finished the end of 2014. I've been having a lot of fun with it, and said to myself, once I get settled down a little more with the rest of life, I would get back into working on it; focusing on hot rodding the/an engine for it. The past couple of weeks I've been thinking of turbo charging it. I found a setup listed in the used parts classified, and spoke with Todd @ protomotive. He said it seemed as if it would be a good setup from what he could see. It seemed like the perfect timing to pick something up, so I made the jump. I do not know how soon I'll be putting it on the car, though. So, I guess what I am interested in doing is reducing size of the IC, or at least getting one to fit under the duck, and detuning it from where it is currently setup to run. I'll know more about what I've got in hand after I pick it up Saturday. thanks again, ~chris |

I picked up the turbo setup last weekend at road Atlanta. I am pretty excited. Turbo looks and feels really good. Headers look like they are in really good shape. The waste gate is nice too.
However, the large protomotive IC is way too large to fit under the ducktail, so I will be getting rid of that soon, and replacing it with a smaller one. I have heard from a few different sources that if my fuel and timing are set conservatively, I really don't need an IC for running at .5bar, and up to .7. I'll be putting one in there anyway. I am going to have a lot questions as I move forward. I am hoping to get started the 1st week of May. A really quick question though: I want to install a BOV. I have seen many setups, some with the valve between the turbo and the IC, and others between the IC and intake. Where is the prime location for this valve? Thanks, ~Chris ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() oh, and another quick question: The header setup has these rings above the exhaust flanges. All except one. Does anybody know of a source where I can find these? I don't have the measurements in hand, but can get them quickly if need be. ![]() ![]() |
