Does this dizzy position look right?

The hold down stud is about in the center of the slot. I have two punch marks, didn't take a pic of where it was before I removed it, duh. I'll be running an MSD 6AL2 programmable and will lock the dizzy once I get it broken in. Just want to get it close for start up. Thanks.

On my car, that position would result in very retarded (different than Paul) timing.

Going by the position of the stud in that slot it depends if the distributor gear teeth are installed and meshed in the same position they were in before it was removed.
Use a timing light to tell and if idle speed is smooth and same speed as before it's probably close.

mine is at the far end of its adjustment.

don't you set it full advance and then delay it with programmable ign?

I don't know about the programmable MSD but on the regular 6al it requires a neg to pos trigger.
the Porsche output is a pos to neg trigger and the MSD will trigger on the wrong part of the trigger. you may have to "flip" the 2 trigger wires from the MSD that connect to the dist. IE, instead of + to +, you connect + to -.

what happens if you don't is as the RPM increases the trigger from the dist will advance the timing. this happens due to the fact as the rotor speeds up, the voltage out of the dist increases. since the MSD is triggering off the slow rising part of the trigger, this part of the wave form increases and so the point on the wave form that triggers the MSD moves. you don't want that point to move.

again, this is what I found when I put just a plain 6al in my 930.

OK, thanks. Rotor points to hash mark on dizzy with #1 @ TDC. I advanced it so the two punch marks line up, it's near the end of the slot. Will put a light on it when I start it. I'm not going to use the programmable part of the 6AL for break in, just the stock advance system. Then will lock it at full advance and set the curve so it has more advance pre-boost. There will be no smog crap.

if the trigger to the MSD is wrong, and you put the dist back in the way it came out, the timing will be extremely advanced when you start it, if it starts. mine did start but the exhaust sounded very thin and the RPM was very hi.

My distributor is set almost full clockwise as well on a 1982 euro 930. That results in 1 degree advanced at 1000 rpm idle. I thought it weird to be at the end of the adjustment but the timing light confirmed.
