930 suggestions on trouble shooting
Recently my 88 930 has been experiencing problems.
The car looses spark and just dies when it get's to operation mid/temperature. I can go back to the car after an hour turn it on and move it . So I know it's not battery or electrical related . Carl's place in Las Vegas Nevada; Believed it was from the CDI box .( controlling ignition ) Sent it off to pelican and had it rebuilt . Didn't fix it . Prestine motorsports in Huntington Beach ; Told me to check the ignition cut off relay . Turbo boost control relay . & both crank shaft marker sensors. Any ideas .? Thank you for your time and consideration

Check out our thread on why our cars won't start or just stop running:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-930-turbo-super-charging-forum/547032-sticky-common-answers-why-my-car-doesnt-start.html Probably a relay. Could be yellow relay in engine bay. Would also suggest fuel pump relays in frunk but you said you are losing spark. You may also want to check the coil since you did not mention checking it already. Let us know after you look through this thread and do some more checking. You'll find the cause, don't worry.

you say it loses spark.
did you verify this by checking for spark when it will not run? if so it could be the coil. its a 50-50 shot when the engine loses spark when it hot as to the coil or the CD. the coil is cheaper, plus if it is not the coil, at least you have a spare.

No points in that car.
My bet is you have a bad relay. Probably a cracked board, wire trace, or solder joint. When it heats up the gap expands and electricity ceases to flow. When it cools the gap shrinks and the connection is remade. |

Absolutely; the distrubutor's green colored, coaxial wire is a known failure point (gets old and heated, and insulation cracks off of it - usually very close to the distributor body). Visually check it out and also see if you can cause the engine to stall by moving it around while engine is running. No such sensors on your car. |

THATS the problem, he put points in it!!
you HAVE to check for spark when it will not run

is the MSD a new 6al with the LED that shows that it is getting the trigger from the dist.
if so look for the trigger. have you verified it is not getting spark or just assuming it is not getting spark

No LED on the MSD.
I can put the pen that shows spark, To the MSD component and check that as well. We tested the CDI box and the pen showed spark, then cut out and the car would die. that was BEFORE we sent it off to Pelican. Now that component is new/rebuilt. And moving on to the Yellow relay next.

here is a great description on what to do that can be found in the sticky for common answers to why my car doesn't start. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/6059866-post53.html When I took mine apart, it was obvious that is was bad and I was shocked the car ran at all.

the yellow relay controls the fuel pumps NOT the ignition.
I don't understand your last post? pen? cut out and car would die? what does that mean, pull a plug wire and put a spare plug on and test for spark. you can also use a timing light, I prefer the spark plug. you need to do this when it will not run.

If things all check out as mentioned by pelican members as above and problem still there, it may be your speed relay under the driver seat, if that is bad it will shut pumps off at any rpm.

The mechanic used a pen / tool that he could place on the wires (would show spark / light up )
The pen tool and was dark when there wasn't any spark. We placed it on the wires coming out of the CDI box . This was Lit up showing light/ spark then showing failure, or no spark ( dark pen/tool )

The jumper test on the fuel relay is an easy try.
i like the "If it's not broken, don't fix it" Feel dumb fixing the CDI box and that's not the problem .!

yes, that's why I am trying to get clear info on what you have done.
not sure what pen he is using and what or where he is putting it on the wires so I don't trust the results. the voltage coming out of the CD is only about 450v, coming out of the coil it is 100x that, about 45kv. yea you can use a neon bulb to pick up voltage but I don't know if it will work on the low voltage side plus I have never done it on an ignition. either use a sparkplug on a plug wire on use a timing light when it will not start. you HAVE to confirm spark at this point. if it is ignition then its probably the coil. the coil is the first thing I would have replaced, its cheaper plus if that is not the issue you know have a spare coil. next would be to verify the CD is getting power all the time. I don't know what MSD you have but they usually want one power source going directly to the battery and the other source is switched power. if switched power Is from the CD connector then it is coming from the delayed action relay that keeps power on the CD once the switch is turned off. if has spark we can down that path. a plug or timing light,
