picking the car up with a "cherry picker"

can the car less engine be picked-up using eye bolts through the engine mounts,or will the rubber pull out?

Ken,
There is a post on this somewhere in the archives; try a search.

I wouldn't trust the rubber mounts. If you were going to do this, I'd replace them with some solid mounts first.

I thought about using my engine hoist to lift the rear of the car, but found the "conventional" way (floor jacks etc.) worked just fine.

Lifting Car From Rear End

Ken,
I recently gave a friend some help by lifting the rear end of his 911 after the engine rebuilt was completed. Although these engine mounts are strong enough to hold the 911 engine in place, I wouldn't recommend using them as lifting points.

Remove the rear engine mounts and fabricate strong plates or mounts to accomodate chains or hook. By the way, we used a portable A-Frame with 2 chains hoist with 1-ton capacity each.

I wish I had a digital camera. I have my SC hanging sideways in my garage so that I have easy access to the underside. Of course, everything has been removed from the car and it isn't THAT heavy. I lifted it using tow straps. With the motor mounts removed, a HD strap fit in the holes nicely. Of course your best insurance, and best friend if you have an accident, is always a good set of jack stands.
