rebuilding drbrian's 3.2l engine
im not sure if any of you followed the auction where drbrian bought my 1988 carrera but he has asked me to rebuild the engine so i though that i would document everything here. i should have the engine out and disassembled this weekend to get the parts over to the machine shop monday morning.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606353028.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606353116.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606353129.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606353135.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606353142.jpg |
so the holidays slowed me down but i got it out today. i will take it apart tomorrow.
it is so much easier when everything is new and clean! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606617636.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606617684.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606617781.jpg |
Excellent. Looking forward to watching this rebuild. Thanks for posting your work. :)
|
It has been a true pleasure working with Chris. He is a one man specialty shop producing fantastic restomods, and his enthusiasm is obvious. The 88 Carrera is just a hint of his creativity. And with the engine upgrades, she will see some great backroads use in California.

thx for the kind words and confidence brian!
|
so i got the motor out and apart yesterday. after running some errands and getting a late start sunday i was exhausted and did not post yesterday. here are a couple of pics of taking the engine apart.
the shop is crowded right now because i had not planned on pulling this engine and have other cars in various stages of restoration, so excuse the mess! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606784301.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606784301.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606784301.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606784301.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606784301.jpg |
here is a pic of what the cylinders look like. i will post more after i run them through the heated sonic cleaner for a couple of hours.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606784538.jpg
|
i dropped the heads of today to get them disassembled asap so i can order the guides and any valves tomorrow.
i will drop the crank and case off wednesday when i get the parts for the valves job in. i hope to pick everything up friday or monday. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606784681.jpg |
|
I must have missed it but that engine looks pretty clean and fresh as is. What was the reason for pulling it all apart to rebuild? Taking it to 3.4?
|
i was selling the car and redid the paint, interior, suspension and only resealed the engine because it ran so good. brian bought it and wanted the engine rebuilt so that everything was new.
you can search for the auction under my screen name on BaT to read what happened in greater detail. |
so here is what we found as we split the case. everything looks great for 140k++ miles.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606847441.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606847441.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606847441.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606847441.jpg |
i wanted to give a huge thank you to the man Steven Stomski! i bought, and paid for, every tool he makes and two of some of them like his billet crank stand, so know that this complement is real! i will never get tired of hearing case halves POP as they split with his case splitter!!!!
THANK YOU STEVEN! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606847726.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606847726.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606847726.jpg |
Is this build being done in California? If so, what machine shops are you using?
Thanks, Rahl |
getting done in dallas.
|
Received the gasket and bearing kits and valvetrain parts.
The case, crank, cams and rockers are in play now. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606976978.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606977037.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606977085.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606977124.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606977166.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1606977210.jpg |
Enjoying this thread. :)
|
As am I. Very close to starting the re-build on my 3.2 Euro.
|
so the cams, crank, oil pump and mahle p&c's are all on the way back to me. i hope to have them all by friday. the heads were done on saturday. we are getting close.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1607458555.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1607458555.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1607458555.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1607458555.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1607458555.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1607458555.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1607458555.jpg |
so after waiting 3 weeks for the IMS thrust bearings to show up from germany and contending with the covid/holiday shipping for the crank, oil pump and cams we are finally gearing up to start Dr. Brian's engine assembly.

here are a couple pic of the case work.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609818484.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609818525.JPG |
and a few of the crank work. the crank was std/std after 140k.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609818623.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609818623.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609818623.JPG |
calling it a night. we got the case halves together and checked all of the case bores. i do not trust gauges, therefore i use not only the goto sunnen bore gauge with setting fixture; but i use my mitutoyo holtest inside micrometers. everything measured in spec.
we torqued the though case bolts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829670.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829670.JPG if you are not familiar with how a bore gauge works, but at the rock over point is when you get the actual dimension therefore its hard to get the rock over point on camera. so the pics of the bore gauge are arbitrary. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829217.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829217.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829217.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829217.JPG the bore gauge is set with the setting fixture. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829771.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829771.JPG |
my favorite is to use a mitutoyo inside micrometer! i try to keep the room temp and humidity to the temp/hum that mitutoyo used when they calibrated these tools.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829944.JPG first i zero them. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829987.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829987.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829987.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829987.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609829987.JPG |
a few more...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609830395.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609830395.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609830395.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609830395.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609830395.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609830395.JPG |
The organization is extremely satisfying!
|
Nice work.
Who did you use for plating ? So few good platers in the DFW area. Who machined the heads? TIA ! |
i get the heads done with a retired machinist that works by appointment only for long time clients. he also gets my hardware plated by one of his venders.
|
i was trained by the legend John Bray, owner of evospec in AZ, many moons ago and he sets a high standard at his shop. you have to spend one solid day minimum cleaning all of the parts one by one, over and over and over...

a few pics of old versus new parts for dr. brian.

here we measure the crank with outside micrometers. first we zero the micrometer then start with the main journals.
ADD 50MM TO EACH MEASURMENT http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609880044.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609880044.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609880044.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609880044.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609880044.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609880044.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609880044.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609880044.JPG |
