I had a setback yesterday. While installing the rear motor mount cross brace, I found it wasn’t fitting well at all. The brace is bent. I don’t recall it being bent when I sent it to my powder coater. I called and asked him if there was another set of 911 parts in his shop at the same time. We had a pleasant conversation and still couldn’t figure it out until i looked at the photos I sent for a quote. Yup, it was bent…

I don’t understand how it could be that bent. I came out that way. I ordered a new one. What’s another $$…

More Assembly

Getting closer every day. I have a fan drag on the housing. I didn’t feel any play in the alternator before assembly. I think i’ll pull the fan and check for shaft play.

I am truly amazed by the complex beauty of these engines.

Alternator FUBR

Another Set back. Fan was dragging Fan Shroud. Disassembled my Alternator and spun it up on my lathe to polish the slip rings. Bent armature… Run-out at least a .100”. I found a NOS made in 1993.

I’m trying Pete!

What’s the saying? it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.

I’m just sharing the fun experiences.

Punch List:

1. Finish Engine CIS.
2. Join Engine and Transmission assembly.
3. Clear Engine Bay.
4. Replace Fuel Lines, front to back and CIS. (Len Cummins)
5. Pull and clean Oil Tank.
6. Disassemble, clean, evaluate the external oil thermostat.
7. Install engine.
8. Install axles.
9. Break in and drive it like I stole it???

Bad Vendors

FYI, I’m having some problems with an e-bay guy. After purchasing a fan and shroud made by EPS from our host, I found them to be sub-standard. Real grainy surface on the shroud, and then the lip was polished (why???). The fan also returned because the surface color was modeled gray tones. I went on e-bay, dr911porscheparts is the vendor. I bought a shroud and fan from him. The fan and shroud were genuine porsche parts, but they were nasty. Fan shroud was pitted and had raised lumps from poor casting techniques. Beware of dr911porscheparts, he stated in my conversation with him that they were not the parts he sent. He stated he personally inspected them before sending. The styrofoam box was taped by Porsche and untouched until I cut the tape. His x-ray vision needs a cataract lens implant.

The reason I had to pursue the purchase was that I must have bent the housing when I installed it one of the times I was it out. I think that I didn't have it fully seated to the case and the roll pin hitting the shroud in the wrong place and when I sinched the shroud band it deformed the shroud. After all the turmoil with the shrouds and fans, I elected to try to straighten the shroud. Measuring the inside of the shroud, I found it to be about an 1/8" out of round as measured at the entrance curve about a 1/4" down the throat. I measured 90 degrees from each other stating at the high spot where the fan blade was hitting. Using a bottle jack and some small wood block I was able to get it straightened. Measuring the fan blade clearance, I came up with .008" difference. I was really worried about cracking the shroud in that it is made from a magnesium alloy. I guess the alloy was enough to allow it not to cause cracking. I think that if it was 100% magnesium that it would have cracked.

CIS Lines 1

I am working on my CIS lines. Finally got the compatible parts. These are Frequency Valves. One on engine and a spare. I’m using a large electrical lug crimping tool.

Thanks for the warning. I've seen a lot of his stuff on e-bay. Consistently 10-20% cheaper than Porsche or OEM parts. But I suspect that either the parts are not genuine or he has very low overhead. Sounds like it may be the former.

You may be right Matt, I didn’t think of forgeries. The quality of the parts were, in my opinion, were sub-standard. These days it would be easy for an individual to have things made in China. He easily goes off the rails and makes accusations. Good choice to say clear.

I’m in the home stretch on the engine. Time to mate the trans and start preparing the chassis for insertion.

Respect for all the work that you've done on your SC 👌
I decided to rebuild my '83 SC cabrio and started to rebuild my engine from US to EU specs, but doing that it gave me a lot off headbreakers and still does...
Now I'm looking for a last part...a Bosch distributor 0237301009 (Electric part not the fuel part) but still can't find one..HELP

If you have one (or perhaps know where this part is for sale) please let me know.
I will bake a pie or two for you 😉

Hi Joblommie, thanks for the compliment.

The number doesn’t match what I used. The one that came out of my car and the Porsche Factory New has a different Bosch number. Both mine have Bosch 0.237.304.016. I purchased Porsche number 930.602.021.FX. The dealership here in the US bought it from Porsche. It looks like it sat on their shelf since 10/26/2012. I would check your numbers for the type car. I hope you find what you need. I bought mine from Checked Flag Porsche in Virginia Beach l, Virginia USA.

The third picture is the one I rebuilt and ran for a couple of months before I decided to rebuild the engine. It is my spare.

If you would like I can call them and see what they have or can get.

Keith

Hi Keith,
Your distributor, the 016, is the same that is sitting on my engine and is for the US ones.
I need a 009 distrubutor wich are made for the ROW (Rest Of the World) SC cars.

If you can ask your dealer, that will be great..

Like to hear from you.
Thanks.
Jo

Joblommi, I re-read your post. I missed that you were going to a Euro Spec. How about rebuilding and recurve the one you have?

Here is a link to your desired distributor.
