2.4 Rings
Wayne
2 Questions, Firstly I removed my rings from a new PC set a while ago and didn't note which was the top and which was the 2nd ring, 1 is maked 'top' and the other 'top2', I assume I didn't note it because logically 'top2' is the second ring. Is there any other way to differentiate these 2 rings, I noted when I way gapping them that 1 was definately stiffer than the other. Secondly, in your book you state the compession ring gaps should be "roughly opposite from each other on the piston, and not lined up with the piston wrist pin" pg 143 but the picture on that page 4-7 shows the gaps aligned where I would think the "wrist pin" would be Thanks Neven |

The other way to differentiate them is to measure them with a set of dial calipers. These should be a different height on a 2.4L. Also note, if you buy new rings, the Mahle & KS rings are not the same. Ring gap matters when installed in the cylinder, not outside of it.
When initially installing rings, yes, it is a good idea to "stagger" the gaps 90 degrees from one another.

Unfortunately they are both 1.5mm thick, the P&C Set is Mahle logically I'd stagger the gaps 180 degrees, but was wondering why Wayne said they should "not lined up with the piston wrist pin" Neven 1973 911E Lux (10 years in the making) |
