How to test Engine Oil Cooler Thermostat?

Hi,
Wayne's book said to put it on a hot plate & make sure it opens.
How could I tell if it did open?

Am I supposed to hear or see some moving parts?

I tried the method & the whole unit is so hot that I need the oven mitts but didn't notice any changes.

Thanks...

I test them by sticking it in a saucepan full of fresh oil. That way, I can hold a thermometer in the oil and see the temperature when the thermostat opens. Either way, you'll see the thermostat slide open when it heats up.

Thanks Dave...

Tried your suggested method & the thermostat does indeed slides. The triggering temp seems to be around 185F - does it sound right?

thanks.

I used water. I found mine to be bad. Yours sounds like it is good. It think the opening temp is stamped on the unit.

Mine did not open at all.

185F sounds spot-on.
