forgot lifting ring
I presume it is ok to undo the one case bolt to install the lifting ring without jeopardizing the seal?
The case has been sealed and torqued for a couple of days but I forgot the ring.

Well I guess I don't have to but the ring is what I used to lift the fully dressed engine up to my engine stand and what I planned to use to get it back down to the floor.
From your question I am hearing that it is not a good idea. I was thinking that given that it was at the top I could get away with it? Jamie

I would have thought loosening just that one nut for a short time wouldn't hurt.... But then again I'd defer to JWW

no problem with loosening the nut and putting the ring back on, i just didn't think anyone really used that ring, other than the factory.

Right - no problem. It's not likely to leak from there anyways even if the seal is disturbed...

|
You put one chain on the engine stand yoke and two chains on the engine mount on the other side. That triangle will be a nice setup to lift the engine. Once it is on the ground or your dolly, you can take off the enigne stand yoke and you are all set.

buy a bigger jack and a two legged stand. I've posted that pic too many times already.

i use a cherry picker and a 2" nylon woven strap. loop it around the bellhousing yolk, and around the motor mount crossbar. for engine only lifting, that factory loop is way off-center.

Right - the engine hook is not designed to lift just the engine only - it's supposed to lift the engine and tranny together.
