People are just paying attention. If you send pics, you need to be ready to have them analyzed. Maybe even over-analyzed at times.

If the engine gets messed up in shipping and needs to come back to you for repair, the customer will loose at least a week time, if not more! This is NOT a win - win. Your point that you can build the engine in 1.5 days is completely unimportant then! If I were to get that engine at my doorstep with those studs bent, I'd be mad because it wasn't packaged properly, not because something hit them during shipping / loading.

I have worked at a large shipping company for a signifcant time. There are some horrible things that happen to stuff. You want to be more careful - believe me. There is a reason for the "crate" engine! If you have had no bad experiences with this method of shipping, you must have gotten very lucky.

Please don't be put off by some of the a-holes on the board that find it necessary to nit pick every little thing. I will say that your contribution on this board really displays your commitment to your craft.
Truth be told I had heard some not-too-good things about Supertec in the past, but I'm ready to believe the nay-sayers must have been complete jerks...the proverbial "impossible-to-please-customers" you read about.
With your recent posts and good nature on the board I will say that when it comes time to rebuild my 3.0, I'll be calling to discuss details. Please keep up the good work!

Of coarse we don't want our engines damaged, win -win was humor.
There are times when we crate a motor ( shipping overseas, complete engine across country) The engine you saw is going 300 miles.

BTW : The only real mishap we have had was a engine we were shipping to Montreal. We crated it, called the shipper and shipped it off. 4 weeks later the customer called and wondered where his engine was . It turned out that in was sitting on a loading dock. Some one had mistaken it for a TV. I wonder if an engine on an open pallet would have looked like a TV ? What's my point, things happen. We assume that Teamsters are competent and most of the time everything goes well. If what you say is true perhaps we're lucky.
With all your concerns I guess we'll offer our customer a crating service?
Oh that's right we already do. When given an option they all choose to save the $250.00.

Just a tip for you guys who aren't car guys. The term "crate engine" refers to a stock engine or box stock engine.
It does not refer to the type of packaging.

Just to add something here. Having recently crated and shipped two 911 engines myself, $250 is reasonable especially with the price of lumber these days. The question I have is why anyone paying for a top quaility engine wouldn't want to pay the extra cash to protect it.

Sorry, but I doubt that a GM 502 is a stock "crate" engine. But you are correct, generally they are engines you buy directly from GM or FoMoCo

I have been around cars quite some time. E.g. if replacement engines come shipped from the Vaterland for a MB, they come in a large metal crate. The crate then goes back with the old engine for autopsy.

If you offer your customers crating for $250 and they don't take it, their fault. Then I take back all I said. They are idiots then. Have an engine built for many grand and cheap out on crating!!!

I think idiot is pretty harsh language. They are people like you and me that assess the risk and make judgments based on that assessment. To date (19years) only one engine has been damaged (oil cooler..... forklift) and it was covered by insurance. They saved $250 ea and with hindsight being what it is, it appears they were correct in their assessments.

It's our fantasy, we can make it as big as we like. 3.5, Twin plug, big port Carrera heads and intake, Electromotive Tech II, Mahle 8.5 to 1 cr, GHL exhaust, K29 Turbo ( Holset) 962 style crank, Ruff CTR cams, Aasco valve springs. Picnic table intercooler, HKS boost control. 600 + hp, Who knows, but it should make some serious smoke.

It is this kind of attention to detail and exactness that would make me want to go for a cross country drive to the West coast for an "upgrade." Great looking engines. Henry built mine too! Three years since Supertec built and installed my engine. Not one problem...it always starts and runs great, no oil leaks etc. It looks great and is as quick as it looks.
