rod balancing
While my engine is apart I was going to balance my rods. My question is where do you grind metal off the rod to balance both ends and the total weight?
Thanks, Tim |

Have you weighed them yet? Sometimes they are very close right from the factory.

Yes, I did weigh them they are: 644.8, 643.7, 643.6 643.4 645.1 and 644.2 with the big end weight 460.3, 459.8, 458.5, 457.6, 459.7, and 457.7. I was thinking I could get them closer.
Thanks, Tim |

Weight can be taken off both ends, big end and small end. However, since the big ends are rotational and the small ends are reciprocating weights, all big end and all small end weights should be as close as possible. You can purchase a jig to consistently measure the ends on an accurate gram scale.
Sherwood PS To remove weight, there is usually extra material at the top of the small end and at the bottom of the rod cap. You can also smooth the surface of the casting/forging. Good idea also to have the rods shot peened for added durability. Last edited by 911pcars; 06-24-2004 at 01:49 PM.. |
