Sometimes you need to be a bit harsher, I made a 'spit' out of a piece of 10mm steel rod but hacksawing a slot in the end, I put this in the chuck of a flexible drive off a power drill and in the slot you put bits of scotchbrite type pads, You can also round of the end of the rod with a file, This is great for getting the crusty bits off
