Hoe can I check whether my oil Termostat is Working?

I'm rebuilding my 2.2 liter from a '71 911. I have the complete engine apart and checking all parts.

I read once that you can check if you oil thermostat is working by putting it on a hot plate and see if the inside valve is opening. i did this and nothing happened. The lower opening in the Thermostat did not open. Should the inside of the termostat turn inside it's housing to open both the inlet and outlet?

Can somebody tell me how to check if the part is broken or did I do something wrong?

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to the board. Please learn to use the 'search' button on the row of tool buttons near the upper right of your screen. If you had run a search on "test thermostat" you'd have found these, among others:

Thanks Dave.

I tried the"Water" test and it did work!

I will use the search option next time.

Thx Hessel
