Another head stud question
What is the best head stud for a stock 3.0 1980SC?
The reason I ask is because the motor is corrently getting a top end rebuild and I took a magnet to the new studs that were put in by the shop and they are not magnetic. I'm guessing there Dilivars. Is this a bad thing? |

I'd use steel studs on the bottom just like the top. Yes, Dilivars are a bad thing.

I wouldn't remove the (expensive) Dilivar's if they were already installed. Assuming they are new (not some old studs the builder had laying around) I think they will last another 20 years.
ARP studs are stainless and some stainless steels are non-magnetic. (I just checked, Raceware studs are magnetic.) -Chris

Thanks Guys.
The studs are all ready in so maybe I won't bother the tech. It's just that ALL of them are non magnetic top and bottom. Is this okay?

What don't you ask you builder what studs (part #) he used?

Are they painted in the middle? If so they may be Dilivar, if not they may be ARP or some other stainless stud. Are they shiny?
My 930 has Dilivar studs that looked good, but they might have been replaced a few years before I got it. So they might be good for 20 years. On the otherhand I've seen a 78 SC that had all the Dilivar studs broken or cracked.

I may be some-what biased but I recommend SUPERTEC head stud kits. They are for sale through our host.
Check the Pelican Parts under head studs.

painted dilivars should be fine for at least 20 years. wouldn't have been my choice, (steel), but you'll be ok.
