Cyl. Head & knock sensor - Megasquirt

Help,

I’m looking for some pictures of a #3 cylinder head from the 84-89 vintage 3.2 Carrera. I plan to machine an SC head for the cylinder head temperature sensor, the pictures should get me close enough.

Reason: I’m planning (hoping I can figure out how) to use MegaSquirt F.I. down the road…

Also, I’m looking at knock sensor(s) what sensor(s) to use and where to locate it/them? Any insight here would be appreciated.

Thanks
Scott

I have heard that the aircooled engines generate too much internal noise for knock sensors to work reliably. No first hand knowledge though.

Yeah, thats BS.

If you are going to use a single sensor, the best place would be on the top of the case, under the cooling shroud. Locating it near the center of the crank should allow it to hear knock from any of the cylinders pretty well.

Right now I am concidering whether I will connect mine using one of the case perimeter bolts or whether I will machine the case for a good mounting point on one of the case main bearing webs.

I too am planning on taking the MSII with knock control and EDIS coil packs route.

When I just had CDI ignition I was using a J&S safeguard unit that provided individual cylinder knock control.

The condition of my engine parts at 130K miles was a testimony to its effectiveness.

I've heard good things about the J&S. Any chance it can be used in conjunction with the MegaSquirt? Per cylinder knock control is pretty impressive.

It could since it intercepts and delays the inductive pickup signal so it could be used with the CDI trigger. Unfortunately I can't use mine with the EDIS setup.

I am selling mine for $200 if you want a good used unit.

Here are a couple of pics of a #3 head. I don't know if these will help you, but is all that I have that shows the head temp sensor.

I guess it would help if I attached the pics, right?

Good luck!

3.6's have 2 knock sensors, one 1-3 and another for 4-6.
A "bridge" is bolted to the a boss on each cylider (one bridge per bank of 3 cylinders) and a knock sensor is attached to the bridge.

For what it's worth, here's a PET diagram of the part (number 9):
