3.6 rebuild has begun!

Finally got started on the 3.6 rebuild for my 84. Should be fun!

And here is what happens when you are not careful rmoving wristpin circlips!!

Ouch! Good luck on your rebuild, I am deep into my 3.2L rebuild myself. It's my first time ever, I couldn't help to notice that you have everything laying around. I recommend you get Wayne's book, it has great easy and inexpensive tips to help keep organized. It will help in the long run, trust me, I've learned the hard way myself.

Thanks, this is the 4th rebuild, first 3.6. I have waynes book, factory manuals and a Bently as well. It does not look like that anymore. Everything is laying around as I had just taken the motor out of a crate and it was partially disassembled. All is neat and organized now!

"Give blood, build motors" doesn't have the same ring to it as those "Give blood, play rugby" bumper stickers.

Don is also building up a 964. You might want to check out his thread First time rebuilder gaining momentum! if you haven't already.
Neat engine stand. I've never seen a "K" shaped one like that. Looks like a drip pan would sit on it nicely.

Ralph, we have had 14 straight days of sunshine!! Pretty remarkable for up here! Not all that warm, but I am not complaining! Notice the Sleemans in the background?!?!

Yeah, so my parents gleefully tell me. We are the exact opposite right now. They are saying things are so bad up there they are considering water rationing again this summer? Does Grouse & Cypress have any snow?

Missed the Sleemans the first time, but now that I look I found it. Have you decided to keep it a 3.6L or are you going with some bigger P's and C's?

Ralph, the P/C set is going out on monday to get measured. If they are out of spec it is going to be 3.8 with 11.5 JE pistons. If they are in spec it will stay a 3.6. Not sure what cam to use as it has to pass emmission testing here without a cat. The 3.2 sailed through without a cat and 964 cams, any suggsetions? I would like to use DRCAMS as John (camgrinder) has treated me well in the past.

Are you hoping that they are out of spec?

Ask John what cams to use, he would know the hot set-up for you. All my info is dated 10+ years ago, geez the hot set-ups back then were 964 cams for both normally aspirated motors as well as the 930's!

Count your blessings! At least you can pass emissions without a cat. I am getting ready to pull my headers in the next month or so to install the stock heat exchangers and cat for our emissions test. Since I get free dyno time (lucky me!!!), I am going to try and do a run or two just to see how much power is actually robbed.

My dad is not doing too well and I almost flew up last week to see him, if things don't get better I will be up there sooner rather then later. It might be fun to take an afternoon and help you out a bit and help take my mind off of things. I can help you drink your Sleeman's.

Ralph, Sorry to hear your Dad is not well, my best wishes to you and your family. If you end up comming up, I can always use help drinking the Sleemans, or even a Sonoma Cabernet!

I kinda would like to be forced into a 3.8, but it will be tough to part with the money if the P/C set is ok as it is! Hmmmm..... 3.8....Hmmmmm

Head studs are out- seemed a little to easy. Only took about 40mins.
I am starting to think this motor has been apart before. Just waiting for a couple of tools arrive on Monday and then I will split the case on Tuesday morning.

Tuesday is also the day that the coil overs and 935 front and rear suspension pieces go in!! Yipee! That should be fun. Alignment and corner balance to come. You can't quite see the primered IROC bumpers hanging on the wall, just out of view, but they should also be going on soon!

I am going broke in a hurry!!

40 minutes for all the head studs. I am having to heat up each one and averaging 10 to 15 minutes for each one. Wade

Wade, only two required a little bit of heat, went pretty easy as I have had the touble you are having more than once! Good luck!

Okay, Okay, so its been almost two months now but today I finally had time to split the case! Yipee, time to send out the crank and rods...... The heads and P/C set went off the Rennsport yesterday. Cams and rockers are back here already. At this rate I should be done in about another 12 months. Ha!
Here is a couple of pics.

Had to get it off the stand to make room for the 3.2 that gets here next week and the 3.0 that comes in early may. I guess my motor just has to wait!! Oh well.
