wow, that is a very cool build. Do you lose any "squish" with machined 3.6 NA pistons and the 74.4 crank? Also, why not use the 76.4 crank and custom pistions (may be a dumb question).

TIA.

The 3.6 NA pistons when machined make a no compromise choice.

Also, why not use the 76.4 crank and custom pistions (may be a dumb question).
We're starting with a 3.3 and a budget is always part of the concideration.
If there was no budget I would also choose a Supertec 935 style crank.
3.3 crank is fully counterweighted.
Not to mention the fact that the 3.6 crank is crap.

I keep telling you guys Henry is THE MAN! The solution he proposed was a great cost effective solution for getting more displacement and horsepower out of my car. I really wanted to go this route. In the end I opted to go with 3.4 P&C to keep my original 3.3 case. I know that I am going to be selling this car in the next year or two and my thinking is that with a different number on the case I would get less money from some people. With matching numbers I thought I would get top dollar. I have my eyes on a 97 Turbo for my next car and that should satisfy my HP jones...at least for awhile.
I never mentioned any pricing on this conversion but since Henry brought it up I have to say that I think it is a hell of a deal to do a 3.6 case and 3.5 P&C's for the same price as 3.4P&C's. If anyone has a 3.3 Turbo and wants to mod it call Henry and ask for the 3.6 special.....even comes with a side of fries!

Rob 930 10-05-2005 08:55 AM

Infrared,

I agree with you that Henry's solution to larger displacement is interesting and sounds like a very good value for the money. Of course, he has the benefit of having access to good used 3.6 parts and he obviously knows what it takes to make that mod work. I checked out the price of 3.4 p/cs just now. Henry is right -- they cost $4600 at EBS. Yow. Mine were about $3K a few years ago. I didn't know that prices had jumped that much. I also think that you may be wise to follow the route to retain your engine case for the purpose of resale, especially with a C2T that is otherwise minimally modified. Good luck with your build; I think you're in very good hands and under excellent guidance. And to think this thread started with consideration of Motomeister! Three cheers for the Pelican forum...

Rob,
I can't believe I was considering MotorMasher either. I really got turned off to them when they told me they don't work on Turbo motors anymore because of reliability issues but at the same time they wanted me to buy a turbo rebuild kit from them. If they don't trust their own kit why would I buy it!! So far in this project I can recomend the following companies:
1. Supertec Performance Henry for all motor work
2. Safeway Auto Transport very good price and service on transport
3. Pelican for this board, parts and the two books. I finally bought them and now I want to do a little side project on my own. Looking for a late SC or early Carrera and TIME.

TWO NEW QUESTIONS>
1. What kind of feedback do you guys have on strut tower braces? Pros and cons for a street car.
2. Anyone have a good recomendation for tires on my 91 3.3 Turbo with stock rims? Street car but still want max performance (good price). Live in Las Vegas so wet weather is not a concern.

cnavarro 10-07-2005 12:40 PM

I have the carbon fiber WEVO strut tower brace and I love it installed on my '66 912 (close enough). It tightened up the front end feel and felt like the car could do anything. It also allowed me to correct my camber, good plus! Only con is the price, but like anything, if it's good, it's worth the coin.

KobaltBlau 10-07-2005 02:34 PM

I would probably run kumho ecsta MX tires on that car if I was working to a budget.

DonE 10-07-2005 04:32 PM

Strut brace - absolutely. I have the Welmeister and it works fine.
Tires - I have Goodyear F1 GS D3's and they work great (ride quality and incredible grip)

Anyone have any comments on Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD07 tires. I have been reading some reviews and phrases like "best tire I have ever driven" keep popping up.

Henry Schmidt 10-08-2005 07:20 AM

It seems that I may have discovered why you work with night vision equiptment.

You're up all night. right?

First thing Sunday morning and you're already on Pelican.:)

Not me , I have a life!!! :)

Infrared Camera 10-08-2005 08:56 AM

5 minutes later you show up. Don't you have a Turbo to work on? :D

Henry you got any suggestions on Tires and Strut brace? While we are at it how do my sway bar bushings look? How about torsion bars? What about the brakes? Just to give you something to do on Saturday
;)

Take a look at the business end of the B@stard

I love this view of the car. It is the only way to see what is under there. Anyone know of a reasonable electric lift I could put in my garage to work on these cars? I have seen some drive on lifts but they are usless for brake and tire work. Maybe some kind of combo lift.

Check this out I found a lift for $1599. I thought they would be much more.
auto lift
Any suggestions.

When you call, say hi from Henry@Supertec

jriera 10-10-2005 06:50 PM

Infrared, send me an email jriera@cox.net ... Glad to see another Nevadan with a turbo ('84 3.3 in my case) in the board.

jeff91C2T 10-13-2005 05:54 AM

Wow...great project. Your going to have a very fun car when its all said and done. Two years ago I had to get into my motor as well. Long story short you're on the right track. I kept my motor stock except for ARP rod bolts and Racewear head bolts. At .8 bar it makes 313 rwhp. I will add that the biggest improvement was exhaust. At 3000 rpm I was making almost 100 more ft.lbs then a stock C2 Turbo (at 1 bar).

Regarding your question about wheels, lots of options. But you will have to be careful. The fitment is a bit tricky on 965's. I just picked up as set of Fikse's (8x18 & 10.5x18 w/ 225's and 285's). The fronts rub at full lock but it's not a big issue (for me). Here's a pic...

KobaltBlau 10-13-2005 07:27 AM

Huh, fronts shouldn't rub at full lock with 225s, should they? is the offset not optimum?

jeff91C2T 10-13-2005 08:41 AM

Good catch Andy, they "shouldn't" rub. The 965 is an odd beast.

If you want the fender well filled out to look appropriate, you have to push the wheel out. Doing this puts the outer wheel into the fender liner at the front. Hopefully these pics will make sense...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1129221532.jpg

KobaltBlau 10-13-2005 09:27 AM

nice rig, by the way.

ok, your tires are the same circumference as stock (obviously wider), but I think I see what you're showing. Are 255 or bigger fronts possible on a 965? Here is a quote from a 930 owner (obviously doesn't apply to you, but interesting for comparison):

those be some big front tires :)
