Rods for 9-bolt 66mm crankshaft?
Did Porsche ever make steel rods for their race 9-bolt 66mm crankshaft? I understand they normally used titanium rods for their race cars but I wonder if they ever tried steel ones as well.
TIA. |

I don't know if Porsche used steel rods on this crank or not. What difference does it make? Do you want to use steel rods? I would think that any 2 or 2.2 litre rods would work. I could be wrong about this as I don't know if these rods are compatable with 3 litre pistons.

Some of those cranks have a 2.4/2.7 liter rod journal, making a 2.0/2.2 rod useless. It also makes finding factory racing rods pretty difficult. The convenient way to solve this issue is to have custom rods made. If you do have one with 2/2.2 rod journals consider yourself lucky. Forgive me I as I have read into your question . I would suspect that all factory efforts with the crank had ti rods installed.

I'd not previously seen mention of Porsche building a 9 bolt 66mm crank. Shows how there is always something a guy doesn't know. What race engines did Porsche build these cranks for?

Henry, can you post the specs on the 962 crank? You mentioned that you had at least one at your shop (journals, etc.). This original post is a good eye-opener, I can't say I know what the journals are on the 66mm crank. I figured it was the same as the early cars, but now that I think about it, that doesn't make sense.

Here are some loose specs off of the one I picked up recently.
mains 60 mm dia. rod journal 53mm dia and approx 24.25 mm wide I always figured that the 66mm 9 bolts had the same journals as a 66mm 6 bolt. It would have made more sense since they had loads of race inventory from the 2.0/2.2.
