Carrera 74 engine(euro spec.)

I just wonder how many horsepowers it is possible to get out of this engine? Original 2,7/210hp. Anyone who knows?
And what is there to do?
Best regards
Olav.

Boost the comp. (9.5 to 1 +), open the ports, change to cams and 250- 260hp are easy numbers to see.

Mine has 230. I think it has 9.8:1 JEs and Elgin mod S cams. Single plug. It also has a decent amount of torque down low. Nice motor.

At these HP numbers, the 2.7 case will not have much longevity. If you perform all of the upgrades to the case, then you have a fighting chance, but if you don't, the engine won't last long at all. Be sure to run an external oil cooler...

when I bought my early 75 Carrera, the previous owner bored out the pistons and intake and ended up with a 2.8L that has carbs on it. It ran fine in the city but first time out on the track and it got very very hot. Now I'm running an external oil cooler and life is good. I dont know the hp yet, thats next. Last owner had it to 150 before the front end started getting light, but said there was plenty more to go.

What kind of transmission? Mine tops out at about an indicated 140 @ 7000 rpm in 5th gear.

my speedo tops at 150 @ 6400 rpm in 5th but the engine goes faster than 6400. Not sure about the tranny.

Porsche Crest

Here is a chassis dyno sheet for rear wheel HP from my 2.7 with twin plug, Mahle nominal 10.3/1 pistons, Elgin 315 cams, straight cut steel IS gears, 38/38 2.7 heads and valves, Bursch headers with megaphones and a big power sucking but comfort giving turbo oil pump inside.

The best pull (I only got a couple to check different carb jetting because both fuel pumps failed while trying the first run, and I had to replace them at the dyno place) was 220 hp, a little better than this one. You can apply your own favorite transmission and tire loss factor (915 tranny), but I like to think it is making 250 (a nice round number) flywheel hp. Not the 294 the factory's usual 110 hp/liter race motor performance, but a nice strong powerplant.

An early sand cast aluminum case removes case problems from the equation.

This is a race motor, but it is so tractable I wonder if it wouldn't work on the street once it warmed up and the idle smoothed out. But I am not tempted, as my street Porsche, an SC, has to be production race class legal.
