964 Big End Bearing opinons pls
so......here is my latest stuff up.
In my journey to rebuild my motor and learn all about it, I was measuring my big end clearances... The shells I have are the genuine porsche bearings. I used plastigauge on one set of shells and as I was undoing the nuts, the rod rotated a bit.. (dry bearings and all that... ) I also used a bore gauge on the shells, with the rod off the crank...I figured, why the hell not, gone this far! You can see all the resultant marks... I cannot feel them with my fingers, but does the shiny stuff mean the coating is all gone? Can these still be used? Or should I buy a new set... Mike.   here is another set out of the box, that I have not molested yet.. you can still see a little bit of a shiny patch on the edge...

Need more info,are you saying those have some time on them?
Do they all show the misalignment?

My bore gages have rounded tips on both sides. They can make a mark but not scratch as yours did. I'd look to see how deep the scratches are and then make my decision whether to replace or use. The lines where the crank turned don't look as deep as the scratches from your bore gage.

My bore gauge has rounded tips too.. and I was quite gentle with it.. the squiggly marks are not scratches.. they are just marks..
And no, these have not been used; they are fresh out of the Porsche Genuine packaging. I think I will just use them. |

That silvery stuff is the anti-corrosion spray compound to protect the bearings in storage. The stuff scuffs off so easily, as you can see by the measuring marks on the other untouched (by you) bearing. It's basically immeasurable for our purposes.
Go ahead and use them, you'll be fine.
