Core engine is a great idea. I bought a 69 2.0 engine for $200, bought Wayne's book and had a great time. Only "special tool" I need for teardown was the cam tool, and I learned tons over 2-3 weeks. Plus, I made a few bucks selling the bits & pieces.

I'm still surprised I got it for so little. There are maybe 5-6 pre-84 911s in my neck of the woods. I was chatting with one of them, and he mentioned he had to swap in a new longblock, because the old engine spun a main. I expressed interest in the old engine, but never really followed up. About 2 months later he calls me and says he has to clean out the garage, and did I want the engine for $200. Picked it up a few days later and hid it in my garage where Mrs Notfarnow wouldn't see it. (There was a temporary ban on new projects, until I painted the kitchen)

Anyhoo, once I was off New Project Probation, I got Wayne's book, a couple special tools, and disassembled the engine. I sold off the parts, but was careful to state that I was a newbie and that if there were any issues with the items they would be refunded in full. All in all, a great introduction and made a few bucks too. The crank is scrap, but I think it would make a REALLY nice lamp. Mrs Notfarnow thinks otherwise.

That sounds like a garage furniture idea. Of course, then you'd have to build a table out of an old deck-lid or something to sit it on.

My suggestion for a core engine was born out of experience.

All my trainees start that way.
I once hired a mechanic with a great resume, including "Crew Chief of the Year, Indy 500."
After a short time I discovered that his knowledge of Porsche engines was zero.
I put him on a core engine and within a couple of days his knowledge of Porsche engines quadrupled.
Good idea, I believe it's the best way to start.

Where it is true that almost anyone can build a Porsche engine, it is also true that like anything else there can be art in it.
My intent is to bring out the art in my mechanics and not everyone is an artist.

It is also true that getting into this type of project for the first time can be overwhelming. If you take the engine in your car apart you must get it back together even if rebuilding it is not to your liking.
If you play with a core first then rebuilding it becomes an option that you can complete or not.

The other up side to buying a core is that the core can be an upgrade. I.E.. 3.0 for a 2.7 car. You can rebuild the core and still drive your car during the rebuild.

Actually I was going to use the case halves as a base for an end table, with a glass top. It's a 2.0 mag case, and no one seems to want it.
