Your input on 3.0L engine with 3.2L Ps/Cs please

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about putting together a 3.0L engine with 3.2L Mahle Ps/Cs (for street and occasional DEs in a 1972 chassis) and hoping that you can give me some input on what to pay special attention?. Here is what I have so far:

- 3.0L case with std. 70.4mm crank,

- set of 78SC heads or a set of SC ported, twin-plugged heads I
am looking to buy from Scott Kinder (YTNUKLR),

- set of Sc grind (will be 964 grind) cams

- CIS set up

- Set of 3.2L Mahle Ps/Cs for CIS

-SC single plug ingnition

What else am I missing?. I will have the SC rods machined to use with the 3.2L Ps/Cs and get a set of 23mm wristpins.

Future direction for the same engine,

-Higher compression JE pistons
-More aggressive cams
-40mm IDA Webers
-964 distributor

Thanks you all in advance for your inputs. Andy

I am confused about your description of the P/C set. Are they 98mm for use with a 22mm pin (SC rod) or are they 95mm pistons from a 3.2 that have 23mm pins?

If they are 95mm from a 3.2, save your money. They have the wrong pin diameter and they are designed for a shorter rod and you will still have 3.0 displacement as the 3.0 uses a 95mm bore as well.

Could you clarify?

Thanks

Yes, still 3.0 L..

But the 3.2 piston is a much better piece allround than the 3.0..and offset drilling the pin bore in the rods makes up for the loss of compression height.

Kind regards

Hi Jeff, it's what Henry said in this thread that got me going 3.2 pistons and barrels in 3.0L?

Hi David,
Have you completed your 3.0L engine using the 3.2L Ps/Cs yet?, or did you go with something else?.

Andy, as shown by Herr Schmidt II (Henry), the 3.2 P/C can work well on the 3.0L base. I think the heads that I have for you will work very well on this config., and I'm not just saying that so you buy them . Obviously you can stick a dummy plug in there and run it as a single-plug motor, and upgrade when you want to, down the road.

Another great combo (that you may decide if/when you install JE pistons) is changing the cylinders to 98mm, either with Nickies, QSC or bore your 95mm Mahles and replate, etc. That will give you 3.2L but with a different borexstroke (98 x 70.4)from Porsche's original 3.2 (74.4 x 95mm).

I have a 3.2L (stock) engine on my stand right now. Originally, I ordered 964 cams for this motor from Camgrinder (on the forum). Now, it looks like we're going with something different--perhaps a modified DC20 or maybe even something a lot hotter if this guy decides he wants carbs and JE pistons instead. So, I have a set of brand-new 964 cams for sale, if you're interested. I'm sending you another PM.

Best regards,
Scott

Thanks Scott. I already have a set of 3-bearings SC cams and I won't know what to do with it if I buy your cams. So, I'll send it out to have it regrind. What would be a good cam for this engine if I were to run the 40mm Weber on it?, with CIS pistons?. BTW, I just send the payment for the heads via paypal. Thanks. Andy

Thanks Andy. A good cam for CIS piston/Weber 40s is the 964 or even the 3.8 Supercup from John D. @ drcamshafts.com.

Cheers
