Sealer for throughbolts ..should we use it?

Hi ,

Started my 964 rebuild and I see Waynes book says use RTV on the O-ring throughbolts. But I see from the recent threads , James and Kirk's that no sealer was used only Silicone 111 grease as a lubricant.

What's the opinion of others ..sealer or not or perhaps Threebond 1211 ?

thanks
Ian

thru bolts

No sealer is advised, make sure that there is a chamfer at the hole (just enough to take the sharp edge off) so the o ring is not cut, DC 111 is good or some heavy assy. oil will work fine too.

Also a good idea to use the green viton o-rings instead of the blue silicon that comes with the gasket kits. I buy mine from German Precision but they should be available other places as well.

I have Wayne's book and think it's great but no silicone sealer is EVER going in contact with my oil system, of which the through-bolt holes are a part.

I have the same issue with putting sealer on the # 8 bearing o-ring groove. Do not put sealer where oil flows.

Thumbs down

Hahhahaaa I love RTV...

NOT! yeah I don't think I'll ever be using RTV on an engine again... EVER. See what I found in mine (scroll down to the pic of the cam carrier... its a classic):

Holy RTV Batman!!

*sigh*

Best regards,

Michael
