Less brakes, more gas!

![]()
Ok, so I got carried away on eBay one day last week... My wife is most un-impressed with the dent in the checking account...
![]() So... Here is what my itchy clicker bought: ![]() with possible cap issues: ![]() Here is what I think I got: * Modified Euro SC Distributor (0 237 301 009 :: Counter-Clockwise rotation) Id from this Thread * Adapter ring * Rotor * Cap * Tight shaft with smoth rotation and what looks like normal wear on the pinion gear. Ok... So I totally got really lucky as this is from an 82 and I have an 82 as well. Or... not. The gent I bought it from said it was from a '72 turbo race car... ok so no turbos in '72 which means the engine could have been anything really. I bought it for a future project as yet undefined, but likely normally aspirated big displacement. Since it was on a turbo car do you think I would be limited to using it on a turbo engine... or can I basically put it on anything and let it rip? What kind of things can I do with no engine and no sophisticated equipment to determine what the advance curve is? It has no vacuum advance and just this big green wire... which is for [you fill in the blank]. The cap looks pretty fried, but the metal pickups do not look damaged at all... do I need a new one? New, if I did my research correctly, run like ~$800 each! At the base near the gear, it looks like someone ground a flat spot on the ring below the ring that holds the o-ring. Not sure why... Anyone? a Problem? I might just frame it for the time being and hang it over my office work space as incentive during those times of extreme work loads... make more money to spend more money on engines that have very narrow use, but create such wide grins ![]() I'll certainly be taking it completely apart and reviewing it. The body is not in great shape and could use a good media blast/cleaning and a little filing here and there. Best regards, Michael

Try not, Do or Do not

Hi Michael
I hope you bought this at a good price. The cap is not serviceable. The black marks you see are carbon trail and the will carry the spark intended for the plugs to undesirable places. Judging by the amount of trailing I would guess that the cap adapter was not indexed properly cause the reluctor wheel to be out a sequence. This causes the distributor to fire while the rotor is between contacts. The distributor can be repaired and properly curved an indexed by any company that rebuilds Bosch distributors. ![]()

Henry,
Yeah it was a pretty good price. I had basically discounted the whole cap, but was hopeful none the less ![]() After further examination, the rotor has a hole where it mounts to the shaft and there is a screw through this hole and the rotor into the shaft. This screw is loose. Could not really move the rotor, but perhaps this would cause the indexing problem. In a few years when I'm building my dream motor, I'll send it to you for reworking ![]() -Michael
