I'm ready to do it!
Tomorrow morning, the case goes together. I know I seem to be making a lot of fanfare about this, but to a first time 911 engine builder, this is the first big hurdle. I checked my backlash tonight, it was .043mm or .0017". Probably getting close to the end of the tolerance, but I'm going with it, it's within spec.
One note that I'd like to make. I installed the "rear" main seal in the #8 bearing while it was free of the engine, and while putting it on the end of the crank, the pressure spring on the inside of the sealing lip popped out. So, one seal trashed. I pulled it, and after looking at it, I see the merit of installing the seals at both ends after the fact. This allows the builder to cock the seal in order to get the lip over the crank before pushing it into place. With the #8 seal installed in the bearing, you don't have much leeway to "rock it" onto the crank. The front seal at the flywheel probably could be done with the crank out, but I'll wait until the case is together to install the seals at both ends. Also, I got my heads and cam towers back from Ollie's tonight. Notice anything special about the heads (besides the Aasco racing springs and Ti retainers) ? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Oh yeah...
So which ignition setup are you going with? I've always said that two holes are better than one.

Well, THAT will be a bit further down the road, next year, when I move to the land of 91 octane. But, I'm leaning toward the Andial splitter setup.

I am going with a 964 distributor and the Andial splitter. It's on the way now. Look for my 3.4 build thread coming soon to a forum near you...

Really? I've had that happen and have just reinstalled the spring and forged ahead. Is that a no-no?

Couldn't get the spring in with the seal in the bearing. Couldn't/wouldn't take the seal out and try to reinstall without hosing up the seal, so I'm just getting a new one.

Congratulations! I love reading these threads; still on the fence whether I want to try or will work with someone who has vast experience, but hats off to you for taking on the project.

Absolutely. I've had a Steve W chip in my car for it's full evolvement. When I twin plug, Steve will be sitting at the dyno with his laptop tuning it....

What sealant did you use on the case halves?

Threebond 1104 around the perimeter, Loctite 574 on the webs and Dow 55 on the thru-bolt o-rings. Oh, and Threebond 1211 on the nose bearing.
