motor hoist points?
hi all. picking up my used motor tomorrow and was wondering what the recommended hoist points are. I am lifting a complete motor onto stand and wasn't sure whatthe best solution is. I don't have a lifting bar etc. looking for a chains/straps solution. motor has injection and exchangers onboard.
thanks

I usually use a couple of assistants and lift by the motor mount and a stand mount on the back of the case. Other options include the bottom of the cam carriers and the heat exchangers. If you take the shroud off there is a hoist attachment on one of the case perimeter bolts.

I use my neighbors when possible. If not, I put a chain or strap around the front motor mount and put the other end on a motor/tranny bolt diagonally across the engine. Make sure to get the chain or whatever all the way up next to the case so you don't bend the bolt or stud, use a few big nuts or a small piece of pipe on a stud and then a nut that fits to hold it against the case.
Neighbors are easier, 2 strong guys can lift a 911 engine, 3 if they're getting old. |

my 0.02 - we get one or two floor jacks and raise the cart the engine is on (sitting on towels on heat exchangers). This can be tricky and make use of a bunch of stands... with the "bracket" bolted to the back of the engine we lift until can slip the pipe into the engine stand - it is not real clever but eventually works.
It makes me want to build an engine stand that has the bracket receptor that can be raised and lowered |

The motor normally has an engine lift "ear" towar the flywheel side, on the very top. That is one point. The other is toward the pulley side, any of the 10mm engine bracket mounting hole will do. Attach a chain to both spots, use a cherry picker, lift it up and it is a one man job.

I use the 2 upper studs from the flywheel side and cross a chain between. Also I use the front cross member, were the engine mounts go, and I cross a chain between the bolts hole. The I lift the engine in the center were the 4 points of the chain meets.
