Someone has been in it before

You can see the 574 sealant around the studs and on the seal of the #8 bearing

#8. Bearing with sealant

All bearings were factory numbered

Nice job, as always, Bruce. Shame to see an engine that's so clean inside (must have used good oil and changed frequently) and has great looking main bearings but messed up cylinders.

Great use of the muffin tin too I will add that one to my list of garage tricks for sure!!!

How many broken head studs, three?

Case cleaned

Safety Kleen then pressure wash with super clean gets the nooks and crannies

Heads are back. New exhaust valves, 12 guides, it was a smoking engine
I figured the wasted cylinders was the problem, turned out everything was.

Got to love the 574

I prefer to subassembly as much as I can before assembly including setting the valves when building up the heads.

Crank buildup using the Clevite rod bearings

Crank is polished and flowed because of the #3 bearing being a concern.

Assembly

I install the bottom studs after the pistons are in place. It gives my hands more room for inserting the pin clips.

Heads install and finishing the long block

The last post on this build as it was only for the long block.
Next long block will be a 3.0, I'm considering a crank drive for a 3 prong CD so it can install in mid year car more easily

Nice job as always Bruce. What's the black coloring on the cylinders' exterior?

Just the nature of the Mahle cylinder I guess and I didn't clean them in chemicals as there was no oil or sediment on them. I just ran safety Kleen while I was using the scotch bride on the Nikisil inside.

Ok that's weird on the cyls. I've got a set of '85 3.2 Mahle cyls that are bright aluminum. The alusil cyls on my former '87 were dull gray but not blackish like that.

So I thought yours might have been coated with something like this stuff

BBE Heat Emitting Coating | Swain Tech Coatings | Industrial Coatings | High Performance Racing Coatings

Not that I know of, they were just dark. The history of the car was good, a major dealer had it but when we got it on the lift and some window cleaner there was cold pipes.
The top end rebuild showed several severely burned valves. The cams showed the rockers riding the back of the cam because valve lash was too tight

Riding the back of the cam, meaning since the lash was too tight the rocker pad would ride on the "uphill" side of the base circle where one would expect little to no follower contact since the valve should be closed?

Speaking of burned valves, it made me think of a friend's valve guide I recently saw. '87 3.2 with 170K that doesn't use hardly any oil (surprising) & had a previous top end around 2000 with 100K on the clock. So I would guess this picture is a case of the guide being starved of oil from stem seals that do too good of a job sealing the stem? Sorry to hijack but just thought i'd ask your opinion.

The white Teflon seals do too good a job of sealing. I can remember the suggestion was to use the white ones in combination with the brown but the machine shop said throw out the white ones.
As I recall there was 4 or 5 burned like in the picture. The owner keeps them on his office desk because it was so unusual.

Thanks for the info. The guide I pictured was sealed by a Teflon seal
