1977 930 modification

I have a 1977 930 turbo and would like to make this car faster / quicker to keep up with newer American made models. I want to keep my 77 as original as possible. Any recommendations on what to do, during my engine rebuild, to improve performance on this car.

I also need to get a new Turbo and Exhaust.

You might get more responses if you move your thread over to the 930 supercharging/turbocharging forum. It's aimed more at the turbo cars than the Engine Rebuilding forum.
The first thing I would go for is a lower geared Ring and Pinion and then go with a close ratio gear set. You really don't intend to get the opportunity to go 180MPH do you?
The close ratio gearing will keep the turbo in the sweet spot of the power curve. The lower gearing (higher numerically) of the R&P will make your engine more responsive on the street.
You are on the right track as far a the engine goes. I would add cams(SC or 964) to your list. The turbo and exhaust won't be as effective with the stock 930 cams.
The other thing I would do is upgrade your brakes. They are rather anemic in the braking department for turbocharged cars.
All this will easily take you over the $10K mark......speed costs (a lot of)money for Porsche's!

If you have not upgraded your exhaust to at least the later 3.3 system I would do so before anything else. You can also update your turbo to a K27 or look into a hybrid. these changes keep the stock appearance and changes the characteristics to a much more usable one.

Hmm, first, get an aftermarket exhaust system, cams and a turbo, you MUST buy an Intercooler, that is not an option !!! Since yours is not intercooled stock, you will need to get a bigger whaletail ( like the rest of the 930's had from the factory). Get a wideband o2 gauge, and read post from the last 2 years in the 930 forum. The search can be your friend. If you just read for a few weeks, you will save yourself thousands of dollars, and numerous hours of fustration and headaches....

And, WELCOME to the boards!!!

I always wanted to build a 76/77 as a low presure 3.5-3.6. Now with the Nickie's and the righ crank it can even become a 3.8. Keep it stock looking but with an efficient turbo. Run C2 cams and about 8/1 compression with 5/7 lbs.

The other way to go is maybe a 3.2 conversion. I would use a set of SSI's converted for a turbo (see ben and M&K), C2 cams and a new K27-7200. Maybe do some custom coatings on the piston, valve tops, and heads to manage heat some.

Could start with a set of used Carrera cylinders, have them bored and use J&E pistons.

The increase in size, bigger cam, more efficient turbo and headers could make is run very well.

Might have someone recurve the distributor that knows what they are doing. Might look into using an MSD system that has a vac retard function built in instead of the stock bost retard system.

Then, a good dyno tune.
