Is there a way to guage by year (on an SC), or is it pretty much a crap shoot? Just curious.

The Mahle stiffening rib was introduced later in the SC production run, but I am not sure which year.

I bet if you were rather inventive you could somehow get a magnet down thru the spark plug hole and tell?

Yes they can. EBS is just one of the places that can do it for you. Give Don a call for details. LN Engineering is another that can do it for you, call them and Charles Navarro can answer your questions.

this thread has clarified otherwise what was/could have been a big delay in my upcoming rebuild with the whole niki v alusil determination at tear down. so, i have a very, VERY early US spec SC (according to engine cereal # the 82'nd 3.0 production motor) and the current cylinders shown below are the more desired niki's as i count fins & exterior finish. have not done the magnet test, but i see niki's by the info contained here. can anyone check my count and confirm my hopes?
![]() has my 1st hurdle been cleared? TIA toby

Toby,
I don't know about the number of fin stuff, but many people do seem confident in it so hopefully that means you have nikasil. I do know that your cylinders have a finish that looks like nikasil. Once you see an Alusil you can see a difference. The Alusil cylinders look shiney like they have glass in them (because they do). Nikasil has a dull grey finish on the outside. Alusils look different because they are not coated, they have the same alloy on the inside and the bore is treated by honing instead of coating. In any case if you do end up with problem cylinders (or worn out cylinders), you can usually get a good set of used cylinders for around 500 dollars. -Andy
