964 3.8 Upgrade. Help me configure my engine parts
I want to upgrade my 90 964 3.6. Here is what I am considering:
3.8 Piston & Cylinder Upgrade from Pelican Fabspeed 964 MAXFLO Header Muffler Kit without Heat 911 from Pelican Chip Cold Air Cams < Need help with this part.. Web cams have been suggested, also a 3.8 cam? Links would be great. Heads< Again, I need help, where do I send them to get the works done? I just want them done right the first time by a shop with tons of Porsche experience. Links? Valves and Spings < Again, having some trouble finding these to suit my future engine. Rods< Help Specs, Experience, 2 cents, please let me know. I plan to do this engine within the month. Last edited by allen8590; 03-18-2009 at 11:58 AM.. |

Hi,
Given that you will use a factory intake system, I would use RS cams. Webcam is an excellent source for those. Not knowing where you live, its difficult to tell you where to send the heads, but I can help you with those, if you wish. We do such things here, in house. ![]() We use and offer Aase racing springs and make our own Ti retainers. Both are strongly recommended for such engines. Properly rebuilt stock rods with ARP bolts work fine for applications under 7K RPM. There are better rod bearings than factory ones, though. ![]()

Hi Bill,
There seems to be some confusion about what constitutes SS cams and RS cams so I must be clear. ![]() ![]() RS cams are what I am referring to; there are different versions for mechanical and hydraulic rockers. 993 Cup cams (some folks call them Supersport) really don't work well at all in single throttle intake systems so I like to make the distinctions. Allen, Induction systems vary widely from the later plastic intake system to a full-on ITB setup such as this: ![]() One needs different Engine Management to use this system, but the difference in throttle response is night & day. SC cams are milder than what you currently have. ![]() Camshaft choices really depend on how the car is driven and what it will be used for. The later 964 plastic intake, along with a good MAF conversion, works very well, too. ![]()

I do not plan to track the car, I just want an agressive street car. I want a more high end setup. Suggestions/Setups Please. Cam, Cam Grind, Induction...this is what I am having the most trouble trying to sort out what to use. I think the 3.8 Conversion would be a fun one, but I need to figure out what works well and what does not. Thanks again : )

Have fun!

RS cams are used w/ hyd lifters. I wasn't aware that the ramps were compatible w/ the solid lifter rockers.
I use RS cams on my 3.8 they are a fine street choice but I'd like something a little happier on my mostly track use car.
