Engine Smokin like a chimney.
I purchased a 911 ('85) that had a rebuild 4,000 miles ago by a reputable Dallas motorhaus. This was in '03-'04 time period. The car then sat up for four or five years without being driven due to the owners illnesses. I purchased the car in this condition. The fuel tank was rusted to the point that it would not even drain )(new tank and pump), the DME needed replacing as for some reason it did not work, and the other parts were not connected as well (Temp Sensor, etc). I have the car running, and it sound like compression is good (although I have not tested that with a guage), but it smokes something awful - I mean clouds of smoke. I notice on the right side that the heat exchanger is wet with oil dripped from the valve cover which has leaked for who knows how long. Can that be removed and cleaned out? Should I continue to run it and "burn it out"? Should I look to something else? What is your suggestion?

You may try and get some Marvel Mystery oil in each of the cylinders to see of that loosens the rings up.

If these cars sit for long periods this is not uncommon. You may have oil collecting in the heat exchangers. Try to run the car at idle for 10 min until hot, hold the rpm's to about 2500 for one minute, let it idle for a few seconds and shut it off for about 10 minutes. Repeat this four or five times to coke the oil so it no longer burns off.

If it were me. I'd pull the exhaust and have it cleaned. Good industrial oven will burn off all the oil residue. Maybe have it ceramic coated. Start the engine and run for a few minutes, then shut it off and look at all the exhaust ports for condition. Wet, dry, wet and dry. Valve guides? Go from there. While the exhaust is off, I would adjust the valves and replace the valve cover gaskets and maybe the exhaust covers if warped.
